Problem - 3.0c boots into dos at 3.66Gz at default voltage, but runs stable at only 3450Ghz. Tried up to 1.7v at 3.6 got stuck at win xp screen. Any ideas for a higher O/C appreciated!!!

If the rig below was yours, and this was the situation you were faced with, what would u do to max the O/C???

Given that i have excellent ram, the ram does not post beyond 240 fsb at even 2.7v? Perhaps the cpu is the bottleneck?

ic7 mobo
1GB kingston pc4000 2 x 512 (rated to do ddr 500 at 2.6v)
in slots 1 and 3 on mobo
antec trupower 480W
p4 3Ghz 800 fsb
radeon 9800pro
retail cooler (would it make a diff to try another one?)

with the above hardware im able to only o/c to 3450Ghz stable. While a reasonable o/c in its own right, be nice to get the MAX!!

fsb 230MHz
N/B strap psb800
Dram 1-1
fixed cpu/agp/pci
fixed agp/pci 63/33

cpu 1.6v
ddr 2.6v
agp 1.55v

mem timings are relaxed 3 8 4 4. Could be tightened once highest o/c reached.

Any criticisms of the above or ideas from fellow o/c'rs out there would be appreciated to get the max from this rig!!

Thanks!

change vdimm to 2.8 i think Kingston's warrenty covers up to that. Heat could be the problem, so are you using arctic silver 3? I have SLK900U with 92mm Tornado and with my 2.4C I got up to almost 3.9G at vcore of 1.625 Don't turn vcore past 1.9 if you're planning to keep your cpu for more than a month. Your ram should overclock to 260mhz since my OCZ 3700 gold dual channel did 260mhz at 2.9vdimm even though it's rated 233mhz, even at 260 i still could use pretty tight timings, 2.5-3-3-7. I don't think it's yoru ram's problem so my best guess would be heat from your CPU and ppl with your CPU has gotten to 4.7G before with exotic cooling.

I hate Computers! My P4 2.4C won't go above 3840mhz. My Sapphire 9800pro core/mem speed won't go above 490/790. I really hate computers!

UPDATE

tried 2.8v on kingston hyperx pc4000 (relaxed timings), same problem persists:

CPU able to boot fine showing 3.6Ghz on post screen, but not able to go into windows
this is regardless of vcore 1.5 to 1.7v

again 1-1, 5-4, and 3-2 ratios tried to no avail, at voltages up to 2.8v

ALSO!!

just tried one stick of corsair xms 3500 and still stable in windows at 3.45Ghz but no boot into windows at 3.6Ghz. Tried all mem ratios.

Ram it seems might not be the limiting factor here

Im thinking one of 3 things

1) better cooler - what is significantly better than retail to warrant additional cost?

2) mobo - using ic7 lastest 16 bios from abit, could a different mobo give better results?

3) have i hit the upper limit of what my cpu can boot at? 3.6Ghz?

What do you guys think?

thanks!

Like I said with your CPU People have done 4.7G, does noise really bother you? If it does, then think about watercooling, if noise doesn't bother you then go for the SLK900U with 92mm Vantec Tornado, don't forget to use arctic silver 3.

Wow 4.7 ? I'm sorry but without refrigerant cooling I don't belive it. Maybe some extremly rare CPU could do it but that doesn't mean very many people can. I mean 3.2 is suposed to be the last of the p4 line. What makes people think reaching those speeds is realistic? Fun to try. Yes. And what is the point? Just to see how high you can go or have stability? Is it that I only have to reboot 3 times a day kind of stable? How long will these CPU's last?

why are you focusing on the ram? that is obviously good for the oc. i would suggest you are simply pushing the limit of the cpu.. remember that just because somebody met a man who had a friend who read on the internet that a guy in taiwan knows someone who manage to oc to 4ghz+ IT DOESNT MEAN THAT YOU WILL. overclocking is a gamble you are not guaranteed anything.

http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/Intel/Northwood/ They have 3.2 overclocked above 5.0G done 2.4C at 4.0G, after managing almost 3.9G with air cooling I believe anything.

Well I'm not planning to keep my CPU for more than 3 years so my limit would be anything under 1.9 vcore.

True some people get insane Overclocks however most do not

Total Entries in Database for Pentium 4 3.0 800 - 16
Average overclocked speed - 3557 Mhz

Thats the average so your right in there.

I have almost the exact same componets as Scott and I can only squeeze 3.2 out of my 2.4c its runs with extreme mem timings @ 3.0 so I keep it there.

3.5 or 3.6 with a 3.0c is a good overclock. check here

Didn't know that, well I thought 2.4C could do at least 3.3, because i did it with Stock cooling. Right now I'm just keeping it at 3.5, because I don't have to touch my vcore, i got 3.9G but i needed to pump vcore to 1.7 Good thing's i took a long time to pick this chip because it runs at default speed with really low voltage 1.48

Look at the voltages these guys are using. 2.15v wow. Thier CPU's won't last very long. It would be fun to order two CPU's knowing your going to kill one. Overclock then and find out which one was fastest and 100% stable. Then take the other one and see how far you can push it. Maybe I'll try that when the prices get cheaper.

Yes, their vcores are crazy, but did you happen to notice their cooling solution?

Those crazy japanese overclockers... makes me wonder where they get a constant supply of liquid N2 in order to keep the cooling going on their system.

More likely they just get to the max that they can boot windows in, I doubt those computers are Prime95 or even Q3 stable. Although if they could show some screens... I would be forever awed

Yup but remember Asus overvoltages(b@stards)

DUDE I didn't read all the replies but my system is almost identical to yours. If your using air cooling then you will never hit 3.66. Ive got a water cooling setup and can easily hit 3.66Ghz but not any higher cuz well i dont know working on it. But I did boot up my system with the air cooling before I went to LC and the idle temp was like 130f and I think thats above an intel's CPU threshold.

I got 3.8 out of my 2.4C with air cool. Temperature never hit 45C.

I can't really use gold since my mobo doesn't allow more than 2.85 vdimm and it's rated 3.0vdimm.
