My recently build pc has two four pin fan headers, one is taken up by the CPU fan. I have a fan lying around that takes a 3 pin connection. Can the 3 pin fit on the 4 pin header?
Yes 3 pin fans work on 4 pin headers and 4pin fans work on 3pin headers. In each case the fan will just run in 3pin PWM mode.
There is no 3pin PWM mode. It will run in voltage controlled mode. 3 pins, one is positive variable 5-12v voltage, 2nd ground, 3rd, RPM. 4 pin, one is 12v voltage, 2nd ground, third RPM, 4th, PWM signal.

Alright thanks. Worst case scenario I do have a spare four pin that I didn't see when I made this. However I'm not sure it will fit since I am using a mini itx case and it's a pretty thick fan. Is that worth trying?
