I cant decide whether I want to get 3 asus vg248qe or get 1 4k monitor, i dont know which, my setup will be either 2 970s or 1 980 possibly 2 if the price drops

The choice would depend on how good you want to play your games in. a 4K monitor would give you much clearer picture clarity and refresh rates. But 3 monitors would give you a better view in a game environment + you will have easy multitasking option where you can view one of the tasks running in your computer in one monitor while keeping up to date on another running in the computer showing up on another monitor. Say for example, you want to watch a movie while you are playing a game. or while doing a work on the other monitor while one monitor plays a game or a movie. Depends really on your interest at the time.

3 Monitor setup is a very good option.

If you're wanting to multitask, I'd suggest 3 monitors. But if you just use your PC for gaming; buy a 4k monitor.

You can compromise on 3x monitor setup for now and go for a single 4K monitor and add 2 more 4K monitor later on when the prices drop. But that would mean waiting for some time. By that time, maybe newer more advanced monitors would be in the market and then the same problem. Hm.....

It all depends on your choice of which kind of visual experience you want. Wider, clear - view or clearer, limited - view.

Personally it's not something I prefer, I used to have this and it took me a while to get used to. But that's all up to you, if you prefer having a much wider view of what's around you, then you could go for 3 monitors.

Its worth mentioning that you have extra points of failure.....i.e. If one monitor fails, then you have the hassle of replacing it or just using the two remaining monitors. Or have you considered the new 34" ultrawide monitors appearing? Like this one:
LG UM95

That's a very good monitor. Not to mention the screen width with such clarity. But the scenario with one monitor failing would be more problematic with single monitor. If the only available monitor fails and there are no other monitors connected to replace it that is.

3 1080's unless you want to poke the screen with your nose to see what time it is. Seriously though, nothing is going to beat a triple monitor setup. If you can find slim ones such as the UltraSharp I would pick 3 monitors. Once you try it, you won't be able to go back. As for 4k has clearer refresh rates, what does that mean? 60 Hz = 16.67, 120 Hz = 8.3. Lastly, resolution is not the main factor to determine picture quality, it never has been.

I'm assuming senseijtitus ment that a single 4k is less pixels than triple 1080, it's not.

5760 * 1080 = 6220800 (pixels)
3840 * 2160 = 8294400 (pixels)

11520 * 2160 = 24883200

Not going to happen anytime soon.

Not a single graphics card setup will be able to run a triple 4k setup. Buying a 4k today to then save up for 3 of them is a bad idea. Display tech is evolving so fast that these current panels are going to look horrible and obviously more expensive than any future sets.

Then we are back to the 1080P triple monitor set up that I suggested at the beginning. I was assuming like it was with the case of TVs, the larger they get, the more distance you need to have from it to get a better picture clarity. Coz the pixels gets showing up in front of you. I have not tried any larger computer displays but I assume it would be the same there as well. Max 27inch for a computer monitor is what I would suggest. A triple monitor would be more than enough for any kind of game or even better, multi tasking. By the way, I did not mean better Pixel clarity. I meant overall clarity and accuracy of angles and edges of the picture. But then again, the size matters in this respect.

Very true. Although I was thinking more along the lines of the additional cost of purchasing & powering 3 singles...if one fails....then having to resort to using two (while one is replaced) and knowing you cannot utilise the full potential of the x3 wide display setup in a gaming scenario. In this case, the remaining two just fall back to extended/clone display tasks. That, for me would be more annoying than getting hold of a single backup display while you wait for the Ultrawide or 4K replacement!

I understand. OP can choose according to his convenience and what he want to see in front of him when he starts gaming on your PC.

We can only give options and opinions based on our observations. OP is the one who will be using the system and only he can decide on what he wants and whats best for him in the end.

In that case, I would advise 6 x Ultrawide curved monitors and just surround your head with displays in 180 degrees! 😀

He..He.. Without a door?

Let me guess... A Tank Turret. :pt1cable::pt1cable::bounce::pt1cable::pt1cable:

Yeah!! who needs Occulus Rift or any other VR when you got that set up!! 😉

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...... K Lets get back to the OPs question now..... But that was a good ... Too Good ......... setup. Only problem, you will only get a 170 degree view as we are all humans.... He,....He,.....

I will suggest a 3 1080P Monitor setup.

Yeah I would agree then..... 3 x 1080p monitors would suffice....they are relatively cheap now to do this setup. 4K and Ultrawide can wait!

Thank you all for your input, I will be going with a 3 monitor setup, as the 4k aren't very reasonable yet, although i did like the ultra wide monitor idea, which i might look into further

You are most welcome buddy. Always happy to help out.
