my new pc refuses to recognize my USB flash drives no matter how I format them. They show up just fine on Mac and i reformatted them from there and they still don't work. They don't show up in Device Manager or Disk Management and I don't know what to do.

Other peripherals that use usb work fine.

im on windows 8.1 any help would be greatly appreciated!

Solution

If you want to only fix your usb device drivers, plug in your usb into your computer with device manager open.
Right click on the first expandable option (should be your pc name)
Scan for hardware changes
Locate your usb device under "usb bus controllers" or its underneath this.
Right click those and update them, should be faster
Oh, sorry I was mistaken.

Open disk management in Windows 8.1. See if you can initialize the usb and once again check if the usb drive is detected there. Right click the usb and see if it can format as NTFS from there

Otherwise, I believe your bios settings have usb devices disabled
Press del at boot up on your windows computer
Go to the advanced tab
Press enter on usb configuration
Enable usb legacy support
Go to the security tab in your bios.
Look for I/O interface security and press enter
Look for your usb devices in there and unlock them
Save settings and exit

If that doesn't work, update your usb drivers through device manager

You can go to disk utility on Mac and choose FAT 32 system which'll make the drive available to both Mac and pc at the same time. If they'll just be used with pc, you can re format them using pc to NTFS

i tried FAT 32 but it did not work 🙁 anyways i am trying to get into bios but now my PC is stuck at the restarting screen and I am getting kinda frustrated. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME!

Do not shut it off while it is restarting, there is a chance you could corrupt your hard drive doing that....Let it complete restarting then enter the bios (if you can't enter the bios from there, shut down your system first, power it on, then enter the bios with the del key)

Also, try not to worry as 100% your usb's are working, just need to tweak a few settings in windows to get it to work

Ok i let it run and it finally gave me a blue screen that said something bout Driver_Power_State_Failure !!! It restarted and windows is running fine but do I need to do something about that error message?? and thanks for all the help! i really appreciate it!

You must have wrecked the compatibility in bios somehow. Reset cmos on your bios. Google how to please, can't explain everything. You'll be able to detect USB afterwards as USB legacy is enabled by default.
Best of luck :)

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
Could mean two things, correct this error first

Open device manager
Right click every device you have in there, and update all of them

Open cmd
Run it as admin by right clicking cmd, "run as administrator"
Type in sfc /scannow

That should fix the error. Now go into your bios and perform the above steps

Remove the usb devices from your pc, and try powering it on...I wonder how that just happened out of nowhere

the usb devices are not even connected to my pc atm... and my computer just randomly restarted. and im back on windows, im going to try ur solution above to fix the driver problem right now, u deserve a medal btw thanks for the quick replies

No problem, when issues like those appear its important to correct them quickly before something else goes wrong :) let me know what happens once you've completed the above steps with device manager and cmd

i am going through my devices and updating them one by one but its stuck on the first device (Searching online for software) which is my Sound BLaster Z card and pressing cancel doesnt do anything. I think my pc has developed a mind of its own i just watched small soldiers which doesnt help 🙁 is it supposed to take a very long time to search for an update?

Don't worry, let it complete there's no rush here

Alright it's taking long enough

Press ctrl+alt+del on your keyboard

Open task manager
Click on device manager, and end task

Don't update that audio driver anymore, could be bugged.
Also, try not to click cancel while it is updating, it could also glitch like that

ok gotchya should i try another driver? i tried updating a bluetooth driver earlier today that had a yellow exclamation mark on it but it did the same thing and i had to ctrl alt delete out of it

That is clearly a driver problem with your bluetooth.

Yes, update all the other drivers and if it takes longer than 3 minutes and doesn't say installing or downloading, use task manager to kill it and repeat with the other drivers
