Currently I have 3x 3-pin fans connected to a built-in chassis controller that's powered through SATA. Fans are controlled manually by a switch on the chassis itself.

To automate this, I'd like to connect those fans to a motherboard using PWM Y splitter. But do I need to power up those fans somehow? Or is it powered via mobo?

Additionally, can mobo automatically control fan speed if they are only 3-pin?

I have Asus Tuf Gaming X570 motherboard if that matters.

If you plug them in the MB's headers no other power is needed.

I see, thanks.

And regarding automatic control - motherboard's manual says:
3x Chassis Fan connectors (4-pin) for both 3-pin (DC mode) and 4-pin (PWM mode) coolers control

So I assume automatic control is indeed possible? But does it matter if I plugin in 3-pin or 4-pin connector to the motherboard?
