+3 Slings and +2 Bolts

If I am using a +3 Sling, and I want to hit a creature which requires +3
minimum, does it negate the +3 enchantment by using +2 bolts?

Should I use normal non-enchanted bolts in a +3 sling? Or is the final
effect actually +5??

Thanks in advance!

Yes.

No. That counts as an unenchanted weapon. Missile weapons look
entirely at the ammunition for the enchantment level. +3 bullets from
any sling=+3 weapon. Normal bullets from any sling=unenchanted weapon.

The one exception is the Sling of Everard, sold by the bonus merchant
Joluv. This is a +5 sling that produces unlimited +2 bullets, and since
the bullets are generated by the sling instead of being real, they count
as +5 enchanted.

For the purposes of deciding which creature can be *HIT*, only the
AMMO's enchantment counts. If you have an enchanted sling and fire
unenchanted missiles from it, you can never hit a creature that
requires magical weapons to hit, not even if your sling itself is +5.
If you fire +2 bullets, you cannot hit a creature that requires +3
weapons to hit: not if your sling is +1 (for a total of +3), not if
your sling is +3, not even if your sling is +5.

However, for the purposes of deciding whether you ACTUALLY hit the
creature - once it has been established that your weapon (the bullet,
arrow, crossbow-bolt) can hit the creature at all - and how much
damage you do, BOTH the launcher AND the missile give their bonuses
to-hit and to-damage. This is to compensate for the fact that you do
not get a bonus for high Strength.

Hi Elliot,
if you want to hit a creature that requires +3 to hit with a ranged
weapon you need +3 ammo. The sling improves your THACO but it is the
ammo that counts against a protection. The other way around this can be
used quite effectively. Especially later in the game you find some
people who use ProMW. Having a good sling and some plain bullets works
quite fine against them. Jaheira always did 16+ damage with her sling of
seeking (and some nice girdle).
