Hello. At this moment I have 16gb RAM, DDR4 3200: 8GBx2 in dual channel (slot A2 B2).
My motherboard has 4 ram slots (A1 A2 B1 B2)

I was planning to add 16GB, one single stick, so I have space for a future update. I work with design software (indesign, illustrator, photoshop, premiere), so the 32 GB ram are sure, but more is a possibility if the prices of ddr4 drops more in the future.

It will run ok if i do this: 8GBx2 in dual channel (slot A2 B2) + 16GBx1 (slot B2) ??

Thank you so much.

Hi @Rukazu

Whats your platform? Intel or AMD? If you haven't bought the extra 16GB yet, I'd advise you to hold off and buy a matching pair. If you plan on eventually going with 32GB, the best course of action would be to buy...

Hi @Rukazu

Whats your platform? Intel or AMD? If you haven't bought the extra 16GB yet, I'd advise you to hold off and buy a matching pair. If you plan on eventually going with 32GB, the best course of action would be to buy a matching 32GB Kit and not mixing and matching. If buying a new 32GB kit isn't possible, then at least another 2x8GB of the same brand/make/model/speed of the RAM you have now. to try and minimize any conflicts.

Now you can install the 16GB stick if you like, but there isn't a guarantee it'll play nice with the 2x8GB you currently have installed. If it does work, your system will auto-underclock the RAM to the slowest installed RAM's speed. (DDR4-3200 are not all created equal)

So if you already have the RAM, it won't hurt anything by installing it. Worst case is your PC won't turn on due to the RAM being incompatible. If this happens simply remove the RAM. If it does turn on AND shows you now have 32GB, your performance will not be as good as it would have been had you gone with a kit. Also keep in mind that just because your PC turns on, it does not mean it'll be stable once you start using photoshop.

Save. Often. :)

Let us know how it goes.

My idea is to add extra 16gb, but I don't know if in 2-3 years I'll need more ram... 32 will be enough?
(EDIT: at this moment I have installed 2x8, and I want to buy the 16 gb stick)

On average, though obviously some users need more for what they are doing, 32GB of RAM should be enough over the next 2-3 years. Of course everyone's idea of "enough" differ's not to mention the actual use of the PC in question. Until semi-recently, 8GB was considered "enough" for most users with 16GB being the sweet spot. (Especially for gaming)

Here is an interesting read here on Tom's on using 32GB RAM.

Thanks for your answer, my friend. So the question now is "32 now or possible 48 in a future" haha. Thanks Again <3
