I am trying to find out ( / get a clear answer) if a Z87 chipset motherboard (high-end) could actually support 3-way SLI properly? Or do I really need to go down the whole x79 / LGA 2011 road to be able to do it properly?

Though it is 3 x GTX 570's so perhaps the Z87 could manage it due to the cards being a bit older?

Also on a side note I am trying to decide between (any help would be appreciated):

ASUS Maximus VI Extreme Motherboard OR MSI Z87 XPOWER Motherboard
(both the same price)

Both of those boards will support up to 4x SLI fine because they both have an extra on-board chip allowing double x16 lanes.

I would recommend the MSI z87 XPOWER because the asus has BIOS problems and isn't very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8DtZDcMrps

HOWEVER 3x SLI isn't very benficial, especially with the price of the boards. You would see a performance boost, but not that great of one. Also not that many games support 3x SLI (although it's becoming more and more). Plus you will only get 1.2 gb VRAM (not enough for any more than 1080p) Also can your CPU handle it?
It would be better (and maybe even cheaper) to sell you gtx 570s and get a single more powerful card - plus it would be more future proof.

A performance benchmark: 2167 score on unigen 2.1 heaven, all settings max 1080p

Hope this helped
