I have Charter Internet with just their basic motorola modem and i currently just bought a new Netgear N600 router hoping to give the rest of my devices good connection as well. But the only thing getting anything close to it is my desktop on a wired connection. Playing games online with friends it is just a hassle to have Ethernet cables all over the floor and was hoping to not have to do that. any ideas ?

It probably doesn't matter too much. There aren't as many 5Ghz APs. I have one of mine on 149 and the other on 161.
To get maximum performance from N networking, you need to use WPA AES. Use channels 1 or 6 or 11. Check the amount of competing WIFI with inSSIDEer or WIFI Analyzer (android). If you too much competing WIFI (apartments) then you will probably not get good 2.4Ghz throughput. You could get a 5Ghz dual band USB adapter. 5Ghz has higher throughput but shorter range and worse wall penetration than 2.4Ghz. Your N600 router should support 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz.

@kanewolf just set up my 5Ghz network on it, never knew i could do two separate networks on it, but on my phone im now pulling 30+ mbps like my desktop! :) i'll give it a go with gaming this weekend thank you! will update my results also :)

Many laptops don't have 5Ghz built in. Don't be surprised if it doesn't show up as an option. Like I said you might have to get a dual band USB adapter. Here is a netgear which will be compatible.
