If the cpu and the ram are fast , it will make no difference from where the data are fetched - through the pci-e slot or the internal VRAM . Btw , the cpu and the gpu are interacting every moment.
VRAM isn't system cache though, so I still fail to see the significance of cpu and system RAM for performance differences between 2gb and 4gb.

What does that have anything to do with what you were talking about? Your point was that VRAM is dependent on your CPU and RAM specs. The only thing changing in that test was the resolution, which I am very well aware that high resolutions require more than 2gb.
