Hi, I want to make a system thats primary purpose is to host video files. I am part of a performance group and we have a large amount of video that I would like to keep safe and be able to easily distribute. Our previous archiver was using just an external hard drive which died. So I need to make something that is reliable

My initial thoughts were to make a little lamp server with a raid1 on it to make sure the data is kept safe. That would also give me a chance to play around with linux a little bit and maybe do some simple http hosting as well. But the system will mainly be storage/ftp.

If anyone has any suggestions from hardware to linux distro to use for this purpose, I am all ears.

Thank you!

For a Linux distro I like SUSE since it's easy to set up a web server with it, but Red Hat is good too. Of course, SUSE is also a bit quirky to say the least :D. for a beginner, Ubuntu may be the best way for you to go. I say visit a distro's forums, and the one that you find friendliest to you and easy for you to understand is the distro you should start off with :).

Oh yeah, as for hardware just keep it generic. In other words don't go for a board with an uncomon raid controller or something. For AMD, a basic board based on a 700 series chipset should be fine, or if you are going for Intel then any of the more recent boards should be fine.
