I picked up a VelociRaptor 300gb HD earlier today for $250(tax included), and it looks and sounds great. However, I'm still not sure if I should keep this drive or get an SSD, like the kingston intel g2 with 40gb that's coming out really soon for $85 after MIR. Storage size isn't much of a problem. So with your "pro" opinions, should I return the VelociRaptor? Thanks in advance!

My recommendation would be return and pick up something along the lines of this..

OS: Kingston SNV225-S2/64GB 2.5" 64GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Retail
Storage: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Same price range... 100% faster system...

My recommendation would be to return the Velociraptor, and get the Kingston 40 GB SSD for your OS, and buy a WD 640GB for programs and other stuff and pocket or save the diff for something else.

The WD 640 GB Black drive is darn near as fast as the Velociraptor and a whole lot cheaper (just under $80.00 @ Newegg).

If you do this, I also suggest that after you load your OS to the SSD, then format the WD 640 from Windows, relocate your swap file, Internet temp files and the TEMP: folders to a folder on the WD. Some SSD's can have problems with the constant writing and re-writing of small files. This has been discussed many times but I can't immediately document where. In the long run, it will help prevent your SSD from slowing down. Oh, and NEVER, EVER, EVER defragment your SSD. Bad, bad, holy sh*t bad.

thanks but i've just ordered the SNV225-S2, this thing has 220/140mb/s read/write seq. speed, while the 40GB SSD that's coming on the 9th has only 170/40mb/s r/w sq. speed. and really really thank you for the tips! i will never defrag the ssd!
