$300ish to spend on Monitor - Help!

I have around $300 to spend. What would be the best monitor to buy? I'm not really up to date on what's new. I would like a LCD and LED if possible and somewhere around 23''

1. This ASUS is a very nice 22 inch 1080p monitor thats very reasonably priced and it has a very good contrast ratio.

2. This is also an ASUS and is basically the same monitor as the 22 inch.. except its 24 inches and a higher price tag.

Dell U2311. Without a doubt. 1080p IPS panel, 23 inch for $300 or so (I haven't checked to see what it's price is right now, but it's always around 300). Pretty much anything else you'll find in this price range will be a TN panel, which is miles behind an IPS in image quality.

Oh, and moto nack, that "very good contrast ratio" is a load of marketing crap. All LCDs run at roughly 1000:1, unless they are terrible screens (such as those found in some laptops), which are well below 1000:1.

It's really unfortunate, honestly. The contrast ratio which matters is the static contrast ratio, but it can be pretty hard to find. Manufacturers use the falsely inflated dynamic figure instead, since it makes the monitor look better than it is.

If the value is above 2500:1 or so (and even that's pushing it), it's dynamic contrast.

Reviews will often measure the static contrast, so that's where I'd look for the comparison. A good screen is around a thousand to one, a mediocre one might be 500:1 or less, depending on the screen.
