i have an aopen 300watt power suply and i wanted to know if it is good and if i will need a better one to oc my rig.
Also wanted to know if it is enough to run my aero 7+ fan.

My own beast: Athlon 2700xp+ , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/370) , 512mb ddr400. SO MUCH faster than my father pIII 550......

most amd cpu's require at least 400watts of power, even then... they are extremely unstable due to the high heat produced by the core...

The g5 on the other hand packs a lot of speed for the little power it uses...

Good grief... that's just not true!

Anyway, a good 300 watt will work just fine. Not sure about your Aopen brand though. Check the amps on the label under the 3.3 volt and 5 volt rails. Some cheap 400 watt PSU's will have lower readings than even a 250 watt supply! Good supplies will have these numbers in the 25 to 30 amp range

If the supply isn't adequate it can generate some really strange instabilities, but go ahead and try it.

+3.3 volt = 20A
+5.0 volt = 30A
+12.0 volt = 13A
+5Vsb = 2A
-5V = 0.3A
-12V = 0.8A

is this OK????

That's a little weak. Compare to my Enermax 300 watt
+3.3 volt = 28 amps
+5.0 volt = 30 amps
+12 volt = 22 amps

Combine that with the fact you are running some pretty heavy iron with your Radeon 9800 and the XP2700+ you may need more power. Still, you could try it...

A standard ATX supply is only 3 3/8 inch high and 5.5 X 6 on the other dimensions. Unless you have one of those new small form factor PC's, you've probably got a standard ATX supply.

I have a 300w AOpen PSU - it is a rebadged Fortron FSP300-60ATV (which isn't bad at all).

I have a Pal XP2100+, a R9000 Pro, two HDDS, and two optical drives (plus a few fans) running off it. It is very stable.

A GOOD 300w PSU should be adequate for most people, but they produce a lot of heat because they are running at close to full load all the time.

Welcome new troll. if you're gonna troll, at least get your facts straight; The PPC970 2 GHz aka G5 has a TDP of 90W according to Microprocessor report, so its hotter than K8 or P4 while mostly underperforming either one.

It might sound a little weak, but Aopen usually uses Fortron power supplies which are rated at 70% peak load (which they consider max continuous load), while Enermax are rated at peak load.

oh yea, and those pentiums, boy, you gotta have like a 600 watt power supply to even turn them on! then they get so hot you have to use nitrogen to cool them or they melt down the whole planet, damn we should all get macs, they dont have any problems right?

You're a crazy Choad. Power supply is supplying power for the whole system. If one guy has a OC'd Barton and a minimal system it would use less power than a slow Celery with lots of drives and add-ons. AMD has a tendency to need good power supplies for stability (especially when OCing), but good is different than huge. BTW what power supply does your full-size Ipod use? A CPU of that remarkable power must need about 10,000W or so, huh? Or is it so efficient that 150W will suffice?

Where there's a will, there's a way-even when it comes to screwing up.

Hi Crash,
I've had good luck with Enermax, mostly I use the 350w model, but I have a couple of the 300's that came with cases. I've heard you speak highly of Fortron before and I'm in the market for a good but inexpensive PSU. Where do you buy these Fortron jobs at a good price? I can get a 300w Enermax for $39 locally.

Enermax makes good supplies, but the 300W is probably only good for around 300W (maybe 315W). The Fortron 300W is good for around 350W or so. Newegg sells the Fortron 350W for around $36 (with a nice 120mm internally bottom mounted fan), but it's hard to pass up a local price of $39 on that Enermax.
