305T max res

I just bought a Samsung syncmaster 305T 30" LCD monitor today, and for some reason i can't use any resolution higher than 1200x800.

I'm using an asus 8800GT and am using the DVI cable that came with the monitor.

Try updating your drivers. I think 1200 x 800 is an odd resolution because even if you connect a single link DVI port to a 30" monitor it should still display a max resolution of 1920 x 1200.

I think the 8800GT should have a dual link DVI port and I would assume the cable supports dual link as well.

If you plan on gaming at 2560 x 1600 with a 8800GT, just be aware that you're gonna be in for a world of hurt.

Windows 7 says it's up to date, but nVidia website says otherwise. Downloading the newest ones now and will see if that helps.

Checking the cable has revealed that the DVI-D cable that came with it is only single link, not dual. If drivers don't work i'll buy a DVI-D Dual link cable tomorrow.

I have been needing a new gfx for a while but didn't get one because my 19" monitor could already handle everything. This has given me an excuse to go out and get a new gfx card, do you think a 4890 will suffice?

Updating drivers didn't do a thing, still can't get above 1200x800 without having my screen flashing. It will just keep flashing until the "revert back to previous configuration" timer expires and puts the resolution back.

You do need a dual link cable for a 30" monitor. Single link cannot provide the required data rate.

If you are a hardcore gamer and want all graphics settings maxed out, then I would suggest something more powerful than a HD 4890. Otherwise you should be okay. See below for benchmarks notice the very low frames per second for Crysis Warhead, then again it is an exception, not the rule.

You should look at the following review to see how the newer HD 5850 / HD 5870 compares to the HD 4890.

The HD 4890 sells for just under $200 if you can find one. The HD 5850 starts at $290. AMD is expected to release the HD 5830 relatively soon (whenever that is) which is supposed to bridge the gap between the HD 5770 (roughly $170 and not recommend for 2560 x 1600) and the HD 5850. Best guess on price is probably $225 - $250 based on current prices.

Sadly the 5850 is $400 AUD over here, but i've decided to go for it anyway. Cheers guys.
