Hi
I am a buying new cpu (i7 10700k) and motherboard(asus rog strix z490 A gaming) and i also want to buy a new gpu. I am between the 3070 and 3080.
I mostly play league of legends and World of warcraft, but sometimes I also like to play more demanding games like rise of the tomb raider and horizon zero dawn. I play on 1080p and I've read that the 3080 is overkill unless you max out everything with ray tracing.
Is it really that overkill to go with the 3080 over the 3070?
I dont have a tight budget but if it's really stupid i might as well save that extra money and use it on something else.

Thanks in advance

Solution
If you plan on sticking at 1080p, I'd go with a 3060ti or a 3070.
If you want to beef it up to 2560x1440 i would go for 3070/3080. 3080 will handle cyberpunk @2k with ultra everything at a 55-70 fps.
But for 1080 yeah, 3060ti would be more than enough.

I just upgraded my son to the i7-10700 and EVGA RTX 3070 FTW2 Ultra for Christmas. He is getting well over 250 FPS at 1080p on Fortnite, so I would agree with going no higher than the 3070 at that resolution. You could use some of the money you save from a 3080 and upgrade to a 2K resolution, which you'll get more bang for your buck out of the 17-10700 and 3070.

Hey dude I see you have gotten good answers already but I would just like to say my Palit 3070 is great for 1440p/144hz so a 3060TI as a previous user suggested or a 3070 would be great for you, especially with your CPU. I'd say 3080 is 4k anything under 1080p/1440p.
