Hello, I recently bought a Gigabyte RTX 3070 (GV-N3070GAMING OC-8GD) used and noticed it has thermal issues. I replaced the thermal pads/paste with thermal grizzly minus 8 1mm thickness and arctic mx 4 respectively. I still get around 85c and 105c degrees on the GPU and hotspot which it spikes to very quickly. I have a 650W corsair power supply and a R5 3600 CPU so it should be enough. 3 fans on intake and 1 out. Previously I had a 2060S with no problems at all and it didnt even reach 70c in this case. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

All of this is at %90 power already set in msi afterburner

Thats the problem with buying used GPU you never know what they been used for and you tried changing things and still have same temps. Have you tried lowering the GPU Speed in MSI afterburner and set an fan curve?. I will never buy used GPU not unless its been tested first and think you should kept your old gpu and saved up for a new GPU instead!

Given the fact that you purchased this item second hand I would strongly suggest returning it. If you're unable to then you may just have to consider this a loss.

85c and 105c
20C is quite typical of the gap between core and hot spot.
It SOUNDS like an airflow issue... AND nothing changed after a repaste?
Depending on the model of the 2060 Super, there could be a gap of 100w of power use between it and the current 3070. That is not insignificant; if a case has airflow issues, it's more difficult to manage cooling of higher power using gpus.

I've went into bios and changed rebar settings, enabled safe boot and changed the fan curve a bit and this seems better but is it perhaps still too high?

edit - never mind i upped the settings and at 230w it goes up to 81c and throttles. Yes the seller does accept returns and I asked before opening it to replace the pads if its OK with him. Looks like I will be returning it. I doubt its an airflow issue as I've got 4 case fans and I feel strong airflow back of the PC even at idle. Is there any way that the 1mm thermal pads are too thick?

WHAT is the actual case?

The consequences of too thick pads:
-PCB cracks.
-horrible gap between core and hot spot, like 30C or worse.

Corsair Carbide 275R.

Its now getting low FPS in overwatch at low temps, it downclocks to under 1ghz so there is something else other than the temps

Solid/semi-solid front panels are almost always detrimental to case airflow, even if that area is filled with fans...

It does this even with the gpu defaults restored?
restored defaults and tried it with the front panel off / side panel off and same result. Goes up 80c and 95c on gpu and hotspot.

Negative. It exists, it just can't communicate with software in your situation.
did you expect me to probe my gpu or something? reading this up it looks like its got the normal ddr6 not ddr6x memory so it should be fine. I just undervolted it so its 64c and 77c on gpu and hotspot 😀

No, I did not. Just giving you a chance to think that you may not be out of the woods yet.
Time will tell.

That does not automatically mean the memory is fine.
Unlike GDDR5 and R5X, R6 and R6X can't be reasonably cooled on the gpu's fans alone.
You can have acceptable core and hot spot, yet poor memory thermals, when pads aren't thick enough, or too soft.

No, I did not. Just giving you a chance to think about a hole you might have dug into.
Only time can tell.

thank you so so much

when pads aren't thick enough, or too soft.
tried 1.5mm 1mm and .5mm and .5 seems to be the only one that got my gpu temps in spec. makes sense for the pads to be the right size dont you think so?

you seem very pompous and arrogant in your replies and theres no need for it. even if you have the experience or knowledge about the subject in question you should know by now people will come to this forum with little to no knowledge of the topics they are asking about. i appreciate all the help i can get but i have to say you seem like a total prick pal. get over yourself

please let this thread die without another 1up. The solution is there
