So im going to be ordering a new PC soon hopefully. I was originally going to go with a 3080 in the build but i am now considering if the 3080 is worth the added price and the month+ wait for where im ordering from over a 3070. Planning on using it for mainly gaming and streaming. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Solution
If price does not matter then get the 3080. If price is a factor then you need to list the what the upgrade to the 3080 will cost. If your going to be playing@ 1440p and then using nvenc@1080p@60fps 6000b, This is going to be a big load on your GPU even with the 3080 you will be getting 80-90fps in some games. This does not even include RT. If you are more detailed I may recommend a 3070 if your saving 500$+, but if it's a 300$ upgrade just just the 3080. Also if your mining and the upgrade is under 500$ that is like a 4-5 month ROI compared to the 3070.

Something to keep in mind here, and I would have to go back and search to find specifics. Perhaps someone here will be more in the know about it.

When the 3080 first came out there was an issue where (some of) the (partner card) manufacturers did not use the power delivery components as spec'ed by Nvidia. It was causing poor performance and I think the fix ended up being a BIOS update to the GPU that actually slowed them down. As a result the early benchmark and performance tests between a 3080 and 3070 were far closer than they should have been.
With the cards being out of stock for the foreseeable future I quit checking to see if the gap widened.

I am hoping like heck I can get my hand on a reference 3080, or that the 4080 (or whatever it will be) keeps a similar design. I have a build idea I want to use with that design so badly.

That is incorrect. They did follow NVidia spec, just NVidia used a higher quality individual capacitors on its own card. The capacitor “issue” was debunked in the end. Also the driver fix did loose a tiny % in synthetic benchmarks but in games performance was not negatively impacted.

I didn't follow along much for the follow up given the supply issue. I was only aware that the cards had been ever so slightly hampered as to allow for the less than ideal parts selection by the partners. Did a subsequent update bring them back up to speed?

Which bronze psu? The 3080 needs a top quality unit, it’s not only the wattage but the PSU’s transient response performance that is critical.

I run 1440p 144Hz and had a 2080 Super so a bit under a 3070, about 20% from memory. I was quite underwhelmed by that gpu with games like Modern Warefare still needing medium settings to achieve 120+ FPS. I stepped up to the 3080 and have been very happy with it. It’s overkill for many games but the games like Modern Warefare I can run max settings (RT off) and get 140+ FPS. Given how games will get harder to run I am pleased with my choice. However I admit I wanted to run the best settings. Either card is perfectly capable, I would ask yourself what is your target FPS in gpu heavy games and how willing are you to compromise settings when needed to achieve that FPS.

I saw no measurable difference in my games with the first driver update and the benchmarks I saw showed the same. It was the synthetic benchmarks that had a little loss in performance, not sure if they clawed that back but didn’t really care.

Uhm unfortunately where im planning to order from doesn't list exactly which PSU it just says "EVGA Bronze Power Supply Unit". The next step up is Fractal Design 760W Ion Platinum Power Supply unit if that would be better. And i dont mind waiting if its well worth it my thinking was if it isn't 100% worth it why wait a month and spend a bunch of extra money for it kind of thing.

I cannot think of a Bronze psu I would personally choose for running a 3080, although efficiency rating doesn’t directly relate to quality and performance. If only those 2 choices then I’d go with the Fractal Design but there are better choices available https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/reviews/fractal-design-ion-platinum-760w-power-supply-review/4

As for the 3080 being “worth it” over the 3070 that is really only something you can decide. In my situation where I was underwhelmed by the 2080 Super I mentioned I am sure many would have been perfectly happy. For me though the upgrade was the right choice.

Well my current GPU is an RX 580 MK2 ARMOR OC, so even the 3070 will be a massive upgrade for me. As for options on the PSU there's more theres an 860W Fractal Design Ion platinum and EVGA Gold 850W, 1000W, or 1600W Gold and ASUS 850W or 1200W THOR Platinum or an EVGA.

I think the EVGA sounds like a good offering.
No need for the 1000 unless you are running 2 top tier GPUs, 850watts is more than enough

is you are playing 1440p, then the 3080 is the right choice. IF you end up playing cb2077, if you max out all settings in 1440p on a 3080, then you will get 60fps, and sometimes dipping to 56-57fps, so 3080 is the right choice

the particular site says the 3080 is an added +350 over the 3070. I think you have answered my question i will probably just end up getting the 3080 and waiting the time it takes to get it. Thank you all for your inputs! :D
