I’m thinking of going from a 1060-6gb to a 3060ti/3070.

the issue is, the cpu is an i5-7600 (4 core 4 thread) and it generally runs at 100% on games like call of duty. So Cyberpunk etc could be an issue.

i have a laptop with a Ryzen 9 4900H and a 2060 gpu. The 4900H plays cyberpunk at 40% cpu load, so is not even remotely struggling with cyberpunk.

do you think it is worth upgrading the gpu on a system like this? I’m not sure i really want to spend £2000 on a brand new build, when i already have a 2060 that can run it happily anyway. But ideally i would like to upgrade the pc, as the laptop runs so loud and is a last resort/only for use when i’m away, also it is for work/studying anyway, so i don’t want to fill it with games (ideally).

Solution
If you plan on upgrading your system, ram speed is a concern, you will need faster ram to get more frames with the 3070.

You might want to look into replacing the entire setup. Sell your 1060 right now on ebay, you might even get what you paid for it.

Not quite but close enough.
Without a cpu upgrade that system is finished. You are already seeing a 100% usage with a 1060, it will only be worse with a 3070 but a lot EDIT (MORE NOT)less will be left on the table.

Upgrading to an I7 for your system isn't a good investment, you will see big gains for sure, but even used they are going for 200 USD, that seems very expensive.

It would allow your system to keep up with the 3070 though without the cost of a new motherboard.

What speed is your ram?

The ram is only 2400, but although it is slow, the pc has never felt slow on anything. Just literally can’t get the frames out.

I have just seen it on benchmark, there are numerous people using 2080ti’s, 3070 and 3080’s with the i5-7600. I just wish it was possible to talk to them! 🤣.

I’m actually contemplating selling the whole rig in full. I don’t know for sure, but i would imagine in low settings and 1080p, it can pull decent frame rates for fortnite. A first time pc for someone.
