Hey, so I'm having trouble with an Athlon II 640 (Non-OC) overheating and shutting off during high cpu programs.

In the bios and HWMonitor, the CPU temp idles around 30c-50c under load, however the core temps in HWMonitor idle around 70c and rise to 95c under load and then crash.

I'm using the stock heatsink and fan, Arctic Silver thermal paste that I've reapplied several times, using alcohol in between applications. I can't get it any better seated and the die temp is ok which I understand usually means the sink is on well. It doesn't seem to affect the core temps.

I can play BF3 for about ten minutes before the core temps all hit 95c and the computer shuts off. I'm pretty much stumped for what else to try. Any ideas or advice?

My best guess would be your stock cooler is failing. It might be time to invest in a new cooler. You keep redlining your CPU like that you will eventually kill it. 95C is the Tjunction Max for your Athlon II.

I am unsure as to why it reads two different temperatures though. It would have to be a glitch within CPUID.

We had another computer that has an Athlon II 635 in it and compatible heat sink. I first swapped the heat sinks to no avail, but changed the 640 out for the 635 and now the core temps are within a couple C of the CPU temps. I'm about to try the 640 in the other computer and see what it's doing, perhaps it has a damaged sensor inside it?

Tried the 640 in the other computer. CPU temp is around 30C and the cores at 19C, the exact opposite of the first PC. Perhaps the sensors in the cores are no good. The chip seemed to work fine otherwise, just that it would 'get hot' and shut off, though the heatsink wouldn't being anywhere near 90C, warm, but not 90C.

Just played a few round of BF3 on the 635, temps look normal, so I guess the processor was bad :/
