30pin or 40pin, what is the difference?

I'm looking to replace the screen in my kid's notebook and everything I read indicates that getting a screen with the right connector is one of the crucial details. How do I know if I need 30pin or 40pin?

I know they are not interchangeable. That's all I know for sure.
