So I recently purchased a GTX1080 and I would really like to upgrade my monitor. Currently I have a Cheap 27" 1080p AOC monitor. My budget Is $400 and I have narrowed it down to either this Ben-Q https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1044619-REG/benq_bl3200pt_32_led_glossy.html or something like this Samsung https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-U28E590D-28-Inch-LED-Lit-Freesync/dp/B00YD3DBOC This also showed up on massdrop today https://www.massdrop.com/buy/lg-27-4k-freesync-monitor-27ud68p-b

I used to use an old 32 inch TV as a monitor and really liked the size, then I replaced that with my 27" and even though not as big, it's fine.

So when considering pixel count/screen size, would 1440p @32" Be a big improvement over 1080 @ 27"? I play games as well and I'm also trying to figure out what would be best for that. The 1080 is a beast of a gpu, but do I want to run games at 1440p on ultra settings, do I want to run at 4k on medium/high settings, or should I run 1440p on the 4k? Just confused a bit and I know a lot of the responses to this may just be opinions and that's fine.

Thanks!

I won't get into ppi as it is subjective and I do love high pixel density. That being said I think the GTX does best at 1440p, you get some performance headroom and as games grow in complexity your GPU should handle it well.

I would also recommend going 1440p but with a caveat which is to recommend staying around the 27" range. Pixel density at 27" is really nice. 4K pixels are hard to push right now but in the next couple years the GPU's should catch up and be able to handle it well. 1440p over 1080p is a huge picture upgrade and I'm currently using the ROG Swift which I've been extremely satisfied with. If you can afford a monitor with more than a 100Hz refresh rate I'd recommend that as well. High refresh rates and WQHD together is a game changer.

Agreed, my screens are 25" @ 1440, I barely need AA but since I like to hunch up real close like I leave it on :)

I've had a 32" 1440p monitor for about 2 years. It scales almost the same as a 23" 1080p screen. Perfect for me.

Edit: That BenQ you're looking at uses the same panel as my Samsung I do believe. If so it's an AU Optronics AMVA+ panel. I use my Samsung primarily for gaming and don't have any problems with it but it's not a "gaming" monitor and has a relatively slow refresh rate. YMMV.
