32 bit problem (?)

Recently I reinstalled Unreal Tournament (1999 version) on my rig but when I
selected 32 bit color the system would freeze for 8-10 seconds, the cursor
would move a little then freeze again for 8-10 seconds. I reinstalled the
game, then updated my drivers still to no avail. I set it aside though as I
was busy but this morning I went to load the Harry Potter game and got the
same problem when I selected 32 bit mode. I rolled my drivers back but was
still no help. Anyone have any suggestions? BTW, 16 bit plays like a champ.

It's the D3D that's giving me the problem. If I run in software rendering it
plays fine (albeit a bit dark). Haven't tried Ogl but that's not an option
with the Harry Potter games.
I narrowed it some more to this: UT 2004 plays fine so I think it is
restricted to the Unreal 99 engine. DXDiag came back clean. I reinstalled
DirectX and video drivers just to be sure and also ran a driver cleaner in
between.
I'm stumped.

I had this same problem. It usually only happened when attempting to
change resolutions/color-bits under Direct3D. It's been an issue ever
since I had my GeForce2 MX. Here is what solved my problem:

http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/

go there and download the most recent opengl driver:
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/utglr30.zip

And use OpenGL instead of Direct 3D. It runs way smooth now.. and if you
ask me, even looks better.

I did the same with Unreal Gold and used the S3TC texture patch with it
and the game looks fantastic.

If you're using opengl, there are known issues with 32-bit colour. Also
using 16-bit when your desktop in 32 causes big problems.

The solution appears to play in 16-bit. :)

I could change to Ogl easily but it won't fix the Harry Potter games.
Besides, I hate not being able to fix a problem. It's starting to fall under
the heading of: "Now I just HAVE to know the answer"

Mm you have done all the right things. I did have problems in the past with
the desk top and UT running in different colour resolutions 16 vs 32.

You could try dx 9c to see if that may help.

Did these problems just suddenly appear or did they occour after a new
driver or application install.

You could always try a repair install of Windows just incase a system file /
setting is screwed up.

Other than that Sorry chap im out of ideas

It may not be a related problem but seperate things causing similar faults
with both game??

I downloaded DX9c from MS's website and did an in-place re-install. Had no
effect. I did read though that a deletion-then-reinstall of DX is a WAY bad
idea so I didn't do that.

I've not had UT99 installed for a bit on my main box. I tried installing to
get a game going around here as a server. I've had it on here before, even
with this card. I think I deleted it about 2-3 months ago to make room for
some video encoding of home movies.

I hadn't thought of that. It seems to act like some DLL may be screwed so
I'm going to give that a go-round.

I can only tell you that I experienced the same problem some time ago but
never solved it. however, i have 2 WinXP installed on my system and ut does
work with one of it but not with the other. os, servicepacks, patches are
identicall.

I surely will. I've surfed a bunch of tech sites and I've learned a lot
about D3D and DX but no direct answer (yet).

I had a similar problem here after installing SP2 for winxp and then
re-installing utgoty. Card: GF4280 64MB - i can only play D3D in
1024x768 in 16bit, more doesent work. OpenGL works, but is too dark and a
bit slower.
It took me hours, to check this out, cause i couldnt switch back to
desktop, i often had to reboot.

Klaus.
If you want to try Open GL with the original UT use the new Ogl dll from
this link. Just copy it in to the UT system folder and the change you
graphics properties. This dll is a bit faster and makes the display much
brighter.

Yeah, that's what I use. Compared to D3D, I always thought this OpenGL
was a great deal brighter.
