Newcastle is the new version. Clawhammer is the old. Thier stock perf is very close. The new (castle) is better able to handle higher speeds. (good thing, cause it runs at higher speeds), but does not have enough headroom to OC to the type of perf that the clawhammer gives, with its lower start point, better heat dissapation (due to larger size) and cache gains. If I had my druthers. I would take the clawhammer, but it is getting hard to find.

I plan on ordering a system from cpusolutions with a A64 3200+ Clawhammer. The mobo is the MSI K8N Neo Platinum which I heard is good for overclocking.

My question is do I need pc3500 or higher to overclock the cpu? Because the site only offers up to pc3200. And I remember reading somewhere that if you want to oc the cpu you would need higher than 400 for stability reasons. Is this true or would I be fine oc'ing to say 2200mhz with the pc3200?

Thanks.

If you're getting generic PC3200 ram, be SURE you get samsung, i got mine Samsung to run at HIGH HIGH SPEEDS! in fact i managed to get them to run at 237mhz!!

You can use dividers, make the HT and ram run asynchronised, but there will be a small performance hit. Pick up some PC3200 Samsung with some cheap aluminum heatspreaders.

Thanks scottchen. I'm not quite sure if the ram is Samsung. I will find out. In case it's not, or even if I decide not to oc the cpu, I have another dilemna on which cpu/mobo to decide.

I can save $70 if I choose to get the A64 3000+. Is it worth the extra money to get the 3200+, even if I decide not to overclock?

And regardless of if I oc or not, should I stick with the nforce3 250 board? My other choice for $25 less is to get the MSI K8TNEO-FIS2R(K8T800) which I know is not as good an oc'r. But still a good board. It's probably worth the extra $25 for the nf3-250, huh?
