I took a typing test and got 332 CPM (Characters Per Minute). Is that good for jobs like Computer Hardware/Software Engineering and Networking?

One's typing speed is not as important as one's ability to locate, memorize, and remember code; proficiency with algorithms; and, ability to learn and adapt.

That said, all-in-all, I'd say that it's a pretty darn good score. Without going into finer mathematics (e.g., explaining standard deviation, means, and whatnot), a rate of 332 CPM places you near the top 13% (i.e., the 87th percentile). If you compared it to the way IQ score is measured -- where 100 (± 15) is "average" --, your score is the proportional equivalent of an IQ of 118. I was able to get a score of 451 CPM with a...

Outside of writing reports, typing speed is not a factor in any engineering field.

It's the quality of the work that counts, not the quantity or rate at which it is completed.

I was able to get a score of 451 CPM with a sprained thumb (the 97th percentile), which would proportionally equate to an IQ score of 131. Of course, in reality I have an IQ of 154. Now that I think about it, this is a pretty crappy example, but I hope the gist of my point got through to y'all.

Please note that the "IQ score / typing speed" example is an artificial device and manner of expressing "purely numerical statistical comparison" -- it's not intended to reflect anything else. I'm not actually comparing one's IQ score to their typing speed, meaning it's just an ersatz-like way of proportional representation.

This is the website I used to measure my typing speed: http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu
