I was wondering how good a GTX 1080 could push a 3440x1440 screen above 100fps. How much would you have to drop the graphics in order to make this happen? Has anyone here used this combination, and if so what were your findings? Thanks!

Very interesting, thanks! I was also wondering how jarring it is to drop the resolution back to 2560x1440 and playing with letterboxing on the left and right sides. I'm currently coming from an 2560x1440 60fps monitor, and in that case you would be getting the best of both worlds (Having widescreen for increased workflow and older games, and switching back to 16:9 for running newer games on a higher fps than I current have).

I actually have a 1080 and an 1440p ultrawide. To get 100 Hz you would need to drop settings or upgrade but I see everything over 60 as an improvement and like the eye candy.
But I also do have a 1080 Ti waiting to replace it.

Actually not really.

In fact, 3440x1440 is jarring at first. And still is very demanding on my eyes. My eyes get a LOT more tired from gaming at this res than at standard 16:9 cause your peripheral vision is used more.

In fact, I can still aim FAR better in shooters at 16:9, cause I don't have my peripheral vision distracting me as much.

Solution

You could also try dropping the res to 2560x1080, thus maintaining the 21:9 aspect ratio, and getting a faster framerate.

Wouldn't you get aliasing since it isn't a clean conversion from 3440x1440 to 2560x1080? When I try to play games at 1080p on my 1440p screen (16:9), everything looks dull and washed out.
