@cancer2: Carputer anyone?

Tablets are already filling this void nicely.

[citation][nom]grumbledook[/nom]Any word on if they're going to release a version later with all the ports more neatly placed and with a case?[/citation]

I very much doubt the ports will be re-arranged, as everything was done in the way it was to reduce size and use the cheapest board possible...there was even some slight hacks involved to enable the use of the kinds of boards they have.

As for a case it has been said they would like a final-final version to have a clear case so that students(the main goal here is education) can see what it is they are using, and to help spur modification, testing, hacking, and anything a student can think of....this might be hampered if it were otherwise hidden in any other case.

I hope someone at Tom's could grab one before they went out-of-stock. I'd really like a review of this thing! I've been meaning to upgrade my video streaming experience without the use of a XBOX, HTPC or other bulky/noisy/cabled device.

So that whole pre-order thing is crap in my opinion. I was up at 1:00am Eastern Time hitting refresh and not being able to get to the page. I gave up after 1/2 hour assuming that they had sold out to those who were luck enough to get in (which they did) - and hoping that I could simply pre-order the next day. I was pissed off to find that I COULD NOT pre-order, but only "register my interest" in the board. OF COURSE I'M INTERESTED! What's the point of telling people you can pre-order when you can't freaken pre-order?

I think they are going to do this in waves, where they say, hey we got 10,000 more units coming, go ahead and pre-order now for them. Then the sites will be slammed again, and they will cut off the ordering process once they hit 10,000 orders.

Instead, let EVERYONE pre-order till their hearts content. Then use those orders and money paid down, to constantly produce as many units that are needed, and satisfy the orders on a first-come/first-serve basis. It just seams like that way, the sites wouldn't get hit so hard on 0 hour, and they would know EXACTLY how much to make.

This whole "register your interest" is BS. Let me order, give you my money now, and the KNOWLEDGE that I will probably be waiting a couple months before the card actually arrives at my door. But at least that way I KNOW my order is in and I don't have to pull some sort of crazy all-nighter again just to not be able to get in. I'm getting too old for that kind of stuff, and I'm not actually that old.

not sure how i feel about the product in general... my browser sometimes uses twice the total memory capacity of this device (average memory usage of firefox is around 600 meg). wondering if it is even good enough to surf the web?

I haven't heard any reports yet on actual sales from batch 1. I have a youtube vid up about it(link in a prior post), and have had a few interesting comments, and have heard that alot of shopping cart errors have happened, but will be fixed(all reports from all my communications refer to batch 2)....but still no word on Farnell stock. They either sold privately(which we were promised wouldn't happen, and I believe is NOT the case), or they simply are NOT getting any of batch 1, and RS is getting ALL 10,000 units. This is very possible, and could be the reason for all the confusion.

Prior to Pi's site going black(static) it was already stated that the stock wouldn't arrive for another 7-10 days. Then they suddenly told us to stay tuned on the night/day(depending on your time zone{midnight here}) for a huge announcement. I personally hoped for the best, in that stock had arrived earlier then expected, and at worst it was a pre-sale( a week ain't so bad). Many reports have pointed to a total sell out, but I say something is fishy.

One of a few things has happened:
1. False reports of a sell out and Farnell is getting any of Batch 1
2. Farnell sold their units and I simply haven't heard word
3. Farnell sold privately(I don't believe this in the slightest)

Then there is the final possibility, and that is an Apple move, and if you don't know what that is, then I'll explain :
1. Hype a product
2. Set a release date
3. Release an amount BELOW known demand
4. Let simmer for a SHORT time
5. Rinse and repeat

Apple has been known to do this time and time again to help further demand by making folks talk, discuss, anticipate, and envy those who already have the cool new thing. I'm not saying this is what is happening, but if it is, then Kudo's....If not, ride the wave Raspberry Pi, and start adopting the method, cause it works :)

In the mean time I suggest you register at RS, because word is that they ARE getting part(or maybe all?) of batch 1 in a week and a day or two. They will NOT be selling through a normal online marketplace where you have to hit f5 in hopes of getting a server response, but are going about it in a much more civilized manner that will reduce crashing of their servers, and that is by signing up to show your interest. When you sign up you are placed in line to be able to purchase a unit from batch 1....if you aren't already too late.

I did another Vlog on the Pi release...probably the last, unless some new juicy event happens. I do include some info on the hardware, including quite a few details that are either difficult to find, or are spread about in so many places that many might not find them. This could help if you're wondering if the Pi will fit in with a project you are planning. The Vlog can be seen here :
