Hey, ive been keeping up to date lately on a64 prices, 3500+ specifically, because i will soon have enough money to update my comp to that :)... but the last week... new egg took it off their site and price watch's prices went up alot from what it was... now new egg has it back and its at over 400 bucks which is a suprise because it was 350 before... any idea why the prices on the 3500+ are goin insane... is it the availablity or just weird pricing by amd?

thanks

No idea, just get a 3400 for right now. Like Darko (I believe) says, by the time you need a socket 939 board you will want one with DDR2 and Express. I almost got the 3500 when it was around 350 but the 3400 out performs it for less money, so I went for it instead. Saved money on the mobo as well.

yep that was me

What i was saying was if you buy a current s939 board when you go to upgrade you are going to have to buy a new s939 board so you can take advantage of ddr2(questionable if AMD will go the DDR2 route), pci express, etc etc etc.

Watch out for the <b><font color=red>bloody</font color=red></b> Fanboys!

DDR2 really isn't faster than ddr-400 until ddr2 hits 667mhz. And amd cpu's dont need bandwith as badly as intel cpus do.
DDR2 has huge latency.

I know this that is why I said

Nforce4 for 939 should be out by the end of the year. This will give SLI for express (2 X EXP16 slots) If you dont want SLI, EXP is a POS.
The 3400 is a better chip than the 3500, so dont waste the $.

Why would you have to buy new ram with a socket 754? Good ram in 939 is the same as good ram in 754.

oh well i thought it had to be registred or something special for 754 that slowed it down... but idk. 939 has the dual channel mem controller and im gonna have dual channel [when i get my paycheck :)] but if 754 doesnt need slower ecc mem or what ever i thought it needed then thats good cuz that cuts some money and the 3400+ and 3500+ are pretty close together in benchmarks.

No you only need registered for socket 940 Opterons I believe. Any unbuffered memory should work with 754, and the 3400+ does beat the 3500+ in benchmarks reguardless of the dual channel controller.
