3570k to a 6700k or r9 290 to a 1080

which one should I upgrade? my 290 to a 1080 gtx or 3570k to a 6700k? I mostly game doom, cod and gta 5

Your CPU is still powerful and has potential longevity.
I think the GTX 1080 will give you the most noticeable performance increase AND be the most sensible upgrade.

+1. Definitively new GPU will give much bigger performance boost.

I had a 3570k before my 6800k.

The GTX1080 will perform the same with either except in CPU intensive games.
GTA 5 and Witcher 3 got a slight boost in some areas, but a huge fps increase in Crysis 3 and BF4 multiplayer(+30fps in some maps) in 1440p.

You might be more cpu bond if you play at 1080p.

i5 3570k to i7 6700k means also new motherboard and new RAM.
For vast majority of games, you won't see big improvements by only changing to i7 6700k while keeping your current GPU.
For very few cpu intensive games, yes, you will see noticeable FPS increase.
Here: less effective improvement for the money.

Going for GTX1080 from R9 290 will have huge improvement on almost all games.
Here: more effective improvement for the money.

More to that, i5 3570k is still quite strong. Only very few today's new AAA games can really be bottlenecked by i5 3570k in a way you can notice it.
I do no think it is already the time yet to replace i5 3570k.
