Hey guys. Sorry to post another "VS" CPU post.

Im in a Jam here. I preordered the New 1080 and I Feel like my system is getting pretty old.

Im rocking a 3570k right now. I've been looking at the new 6700k and wondering if its worth building a new computer for.

I was gonna go with a ROG Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard and a Corsair 100i and Overclock it.

Does this seem like a waste of money?

Solution
I retired my 3570K build when I put together my Skylake, and the Hero is a great mobo, I throw a lot at my rigs and the Hero has taken everything without a flinch, just keeps purring along 😉 Go for it !
Nope moving from 3rg gen to 6th gen is not a waste of money. Especially because 3rd gen doesnt supports DX 12. For motherboard, Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 would be a lot much more better choice than Asus Maximus VIII Hero, both cost almost the same.
For the CPU cooler, I suggest rather go for the Corsair H100i GTX version.
Good luck.

Gigabyte's quality and customer support is better than MSI. Also you get a I/O Illumination system with Gigabyte. And the color scheme of Gigabyte looks much better in my opinion. MSI's red colour looks pretty lame.

It would be a waste of money becasue there are hardly any games using DX12 and the difference between the current intel chips over from sandy to ivy is a few FPS in actual gameplay. So you would be paying $500-700 for a few FPS that you probably xwouldnt notice.

A complete waste of money really.....

The guy above is talking rubbish.... a few leds on a motherboard is the very definition of a waste of money ..if you want leds buy an led strip for a few $$ !!!

Dont take my word for it though

Since when does dx12 not work on a system because it's a 3rd gen intel cpu? It will need windows 10 as the os for dx12 support and the gpu will have to be fully (preferably) dx12 compliant along with a dx12 coded game in order to take advantage of it.

What resolution are you looking to game on, 1080p, 1440p? The gtx 1080 might be a tad overkill, the gtx 1070 is supposed to offer greater performance than the 980ti/gtx titan which are already pretty much overkill for 1080p. If you have the budget then of course there's great hardware out there. Just trying to help you rather than tell you your only option is to blindly throw your wallet at your pc to get better gaming.

He said that he pre-ordered a 1080. What relevance does it have the integrated GPU at this point?
Ah, yes, absolutely zero because the 1080 is supporting DX12 (like the 900 series too).
It's funny how eager are some to spend other people money. There is no performance advantage on that swap, plus it requires to change the MoBo, the memory... hundreds of $.
For OP: If you feel like, just upgrade the CPU on the existing MoBo, eBay has some good deals for 3rd gen i7-3770 or even Xeon (check you mobo compatibility list).

Well, the main thing for me is that I really enjoy putting computers together. So the money isnt the biggest issue here. Its my hobby :)

The difference is here.
The i5 has 4 cores and 4 threads. The new i7 has 4 cores and 8 threads and due to the 14nm size there is a increase in efficiency.

In games Like GTA 5 that are CPU intensive due to the large amount of physics and streaming going on having those extra threads makes a huge difference.
Racing games like project cars is another good example of this.

I also ordered an Asus ROG swift IPS model, so I will start gaming at 1440p

Another thing to consider is the fact that games are starting to take advantage of more than just 4 threads on CPUs

It would be a shame to spend so much money on a high end video card that is being choked by a mid ranged CPU.

I also am running my i5 3570k at stock frequencies because I really lost in the Silicon lottery. It doesnt overclock past 4.1ghz xD

You can go with Asus Maximus VIII, just finished checking its review and its a good one to spend money on. Sorry, I suggested Gigabyte model based on my earlier research a few weeks ago and hadn't really checked any Asus motherboard's review because I just trust their motherboards blindly and dont bother to research on them. However at that time I founf Gigabyte's model to be full of features which I kinda liked, so thats why suggested you. Although Asus Maximus VIII Hero is better in Audio and stability. Good Luck!

Thunderballs I am very grateful for your post and YouTube video link. You just made my day bud.
You see about 3-4 years ago I assembled my pc which I have still.
I5 3570k
8gb ddr3 1600 ripjaws
Gtx 670
512 gb ssd Samsung evolution
Sabertooth motherboard 1155 socket
Monitor Asus vg278he

Today I ordered gtx 1060 6gb to replace my 670
And I'll be buying another 8 gb of ram shortly.
I was thinking of upgrading my mobo, cpu, ram, and cooler to 6700 i7 which in total would cost me 650 gbp here in UK.
After watching video you shared I am indeed very grateful!
Huge thanks from Crimean guy living in the UK lol

you must be the first person ever to rank a Realtek Chip over a Creative chip. and forget that Asus SupremeFX - that's plain marketing

but in this price range (>200€) there's basically no better/worse board anymore and it comes down to availablity, certain special features, and preferences in looks

got a GA Gaming 7 myself, it's a nice board and the teething problems of the software suit are long over by now
the ASUS Maximus series of course is a very good quality series as well
