I know, the question has been asked thousands of times, but Micro Center has the 3570K for $190 (+ $50 off any Z68/Z77 Motherboard) and the 2500k for $170 and the same deal with the motherboards. Is the performance boost worth the $20 and heat? The main uses for this processor are going to be gaming (most game genres)

At only a $20 difference, for a new build, I would pick the 3750K.
But, If $20 is very important to you, then the 2500K is as good as it ever was, and a bit cheaper now.

If you are OK with less than a maximum OC, I think you will do a bit better with the 3750K because of the 5-10% bettter IPC.

It is not clear to me yet what the virtu capability brings to gaming performance or smoother monitor performance with ivy bridge.
Perhaps we will soon get some definitive articles on that.

probably depends on who you ask.

If youre using HD graphics 400, its worth it.
If you like having new hardware its worth it.
For actual performance increase in gaming with a discrete graphics card, its debatable.

but man, the i5-2500k for 170$ is a sweet deal

+1.

When gaming with a discrete card would you ever notice a difference between Sandy and Ivy? My answer would be no.

Take the sandy bridge @$170 with the mobo combo and RUN.
