Hi there,
Just wondering whether an i5 9600k oc or a r7 3700x oc would be better purely for gaming. Playing gta 5, hitman 2, tom clancy games at 4k 60hz with 2080 super.

Cheers

There wont be any need to OC the 3700x...it'll be just fine at stock with a good cooler or if you must OC then just run PBO.

The 9600k will also get the job done for now...but wont last anywhere near as long as the 3700x which also enjoys at least one more full product release for socket AM4.

At 4K60 gaming they are the same but the Ryzen will be much faster at all other tasks. It has 2 extra core and 10 extra threads. Future games will benefit from those so the 3700X is more future proof.
Get the 3700X. Like others said, the 3700X is AM4 which will also be used for Ryzen 4000 to which you could upgrade for a faster and more core counts CPU in the future.

Edit: For your games the 2080S will be perfect but if you intend to play demanding games like AC Odyssey and RDR2, you will need a 2080 Ti and even some OC on the GPU to get 4K60. I still get 30FPS min in AC Odyssey at 4K60 with a 2080 Ti at 2070Mhz Core and 2000Mhz MEM.
