I want to upgrade my ancient i7 2600 to an ryzen 3700x for both the power increase for playing new release games at high settings and future proofing as I want my pc to last at least 3 years before needing to upgrade cpu again.
can anyone tell me what motherboards work straight out of the box as I won’t have an older ryzen cpu to update bios on older motherboards
budget Wise anywhere between 100 to 200 pounds.

At this point almost every older generation motherboard (B450,X470) will have a compatible bios. B550 , X570 and MAX series motherboards from MSI are 100% guaranteed , for other B450,X470 its always safer to ask the store first. But you better pick a B550 or X570 so you can have PCI-e 4.0 support too. Your budget is enough.

Any X570 or B550 chipset. MSI MAX series will work out of the box right away.

I run my 3700X with my old X370 motherboard but if i would buy a new motherboard right now for the 3700X would be one of these:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-b550-a-pro-amd-am4-pro-series-b550-atx-motherboard-mb-357-ms.html
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/gigabyte-b550-aorus-elite-amd-am4-b550-atx-motherboard-mb-58v-gi.html
From 130 to 160 pounds range.

Nice il check them out now

Looking at YouTube though the tomohawk seems to run very high temps around 70 degrees which apparently is safe but theres an msI b550m bazooka that runs a 3700x at around 60 which would be better for overclocking.

Are you referring about VRM's thermal? I have an AX370 Gaming K5 that has the worst VRM cooling solution and it peaks at 70-80C. I also tested Ryzen 7 3700X with a B450 Tomahawk and the VRM temps are around 40-45C at full load. You are probably looking something wrong.

Yeah I was I’ve found a few motherboards and it looks like it’s between the msi b550m pro or the tomahawk just got to make one final check because I want maximum performance for the Best money and with pc parts that harder said than done.
