I'm running a HD3870 512MB right now with a Phenom 9600 @ 2.7ghz and 4gb of DDR2. What kind of performance gains can I expect if I upgrade to a HD4870 in Crysis?
You will see a very nice performance increase. I have both, the 3870 and the 4870 and a BFG 8800gts 512mb (G92) which I believe is one of the best cards Nvida has come out with. The 3870 doesn't even beet or come close to the 8800gts 512mb. The 4870 512mb beats the 8800gts. Get the 4870 you will enjoy the performance increase, trust me.
Thanks for the replies. I'm really thinking about upgrading to the 4870. I've seen some decent prices around ~150. In terms of price/performance, would you pick the 4870 or a 4770?
buying a 4870 and running it at 12x10 *should* allow you to max out any game out there, *maybe* not crysis but it would be damn close.
I'm pretty sure it would, my 4850 512 on 1280x1024 can get most settings on very high with a little 2xAF if I can deal with the occassional fps drop. Also had a little trouble with crashing on motion blur on very high with everything so had to back some of them off.
The HIS 4870 requires a 500watt or greater PSU. I found a XFX 4870 that says it requires a 450watt PSU. With that in mind, my current PSU is an Antec 500watt and I am not really wanting to upgrade it right now. If I get the HIS version, should I be fine?
@ CooLWoLF: I suspect there will be a price premium for the new DX11 cards for a few months until stock levals rise, but the 'old' cards are likely to get a hammering as E-tailers clear their inventory.
If you can wait until October/November you could bag a nice bargain.
$90 HD4870 anyone?
It's your choice.
