Does 3G data connection with a laptop use plan minutes? Or is it an added
option to your plan?

Yes, it uses plan minutes, but it is included automatically with the
AmericasChoice plan.

It shows up on download tests around 60 to 80 kbps most of the time
(occassionally higher or lower). However, the latency is longer - maybe a
second. I find a good dial-up 56k connection to actually be faster for web
browsing, but the 3G is quite nice when you are on the road.

I think there is some confusion here - when I think of "3G", I am thinking
of VZW's 1xEVDO network which is in my experience 400k down/100k up. Only
available in San Diego and Washington D.C. Only available via the Sierra
Aircard 5220, and not possible with any existing cell phone. It is not
free, only available as part of the $79/mo unlimited "Broadband Access"
plan. At least that's the way I understand it. When you're connected to
the 1xEVDO service, the "3G" indicator lights up on the Mobile Connection
Manager software on the laptop.

The 5220 card will also operate just fine on the VZW 1xRTT network in the
rest of the country (approx 100kbps if you are lucky) The 1xRTT is what
you can get on certain VZW cellphones that are compatible with their Mobile
Office Kit. When you're connected to 1xRTT service the "1x" indicator
lights up on the Mobile Connection Manager software (or your cell phone).

Does Verizon have a good coverage on their 3G? Can a 3G phone connect to a
2G signal, in areas where 3G is not available.

I have a 2G phone with Sprint now. I always carry my laptop with me
whenever I go some distance from home at night and the weekends. I am on
call to give support to the entire IT operations in the company I work for.
2G is too slow for me. I can't bear it any longer. Sprint does not give me
a break to an upgrade path towards a vision phone. So I might as well
switch to Verizon - if the 3G service with them is reliable.

Well... depends where you are. The 3G is just as dependable as the
voice service. If you are going for a lot of time during peak hours then
the $80? unlimited data plan in conjunction with a voice plan for the
talk minutes you need will be less expensive than a really big AC plan.

futuredial.com lists these two columns on ther SnapDialer software: "2G"
and "3G/GPRS".

I'm not an expert on this but the "3G" is comparable to Sprint PCS's Vision
plan.

1xEVDO is being deployed nationally. There are supposed to be some
phones coming that use it, but whether they will allow tethered laptop use
isn't clear to me.
