3rd party scanning program

Are there free 3rd party scanning programs that people use?

I have a Cannon mx882 printer/scanner. Although I like the scanner itself I HATE the canon programs used to print and scan. I cannot scan from the scanner itself! I have to select "scan" from a Cannon program. Also there are many things I seriously hate about it.

HPs and Epsons both allow you to scan from the unit itself to a desktop.
