I have 2 sticks of 2GB DDR3 RAM on my pc, totaling 4 GB .
I read that with AMD FX CPUs the RAM works only on Unganged mode which if I understood correctly is something like single channel memory where each stick is used by a number of cores and the two of them does not work as a whole bunch of RAM (as in dual channel - if i understood correctly).
A friend of mine sells really cheap a 4GB stick of the same brand and model that has same timings and rating as my other 2.
I have the FX 6300 and MSI 760GM-E51 mobo and the extra 4 GB will come handy.
Will I have a reduction in performance, especially in gaming?
I cannot judge because this is my first AMD CPU and I do not understand really the mode of ganged and unganged

Ram will work in both single or dual channel on AMD CPUs. Filling an uneven number of slots will not work well and will likely drop you to single-channel mode.

Another problem is the memory controller doesn't like all 4 slots to be populated. It drops down 1 speed level and usually needs more voltage to support the extra memory slots.

It would be better to replace your existing RAM with a 2x4GB kit for a total of 8GB. Don't know if this is in your budget, but it is the best solution.

Here's an 8GB kit that will work.

There is no such thing for FX6300 or any of the FX line CPUs not supporting Dual channeling. They perfectly do. The only thing is you need to use the perfectly matching set of RAMs for it. Dual channel memory will be around 10-15% faster than single channel memory. In Performance in real world however, you will not see a huge difference.
