I've had this 3TB WD MyBook for almost a year now and it has had no problems up until this point.

A little over a month ago I was at a friend's house and was about to transfer some files over to his computer. This external has had no problems connecting to his laptop before, but this time the drivers for the device didn't install right or something similar -- the entire moment is a bit of a blur. We connected and disconnected the device multiple times to his laptop and each time the computer never recognized that anything had been plugged in. We then tried to connect it to a friend's computer -- the same problem occurred. It was like nothing had ever been plugged in.
A week later I'm home and with more resources to troubleshoot. My own home computer didn't recognize the EHD anymore.

it doesn't show up under My Computer anymore. When plugged in, the LED blink at a continuous and steady rate. When first plugged in, I can hear that it's trying to read something -- but those stop about a minute after being connected. It does, however, show up under Device Manager;

it also shows up under Disk Management as an unknown, uninitialized "Disk 5";

I've tried multiple data recovery programs (namely; Find and Mount, TestDisk, GetDataBack, Wondershare Data Recovery, Recurva) and they all either can't find the EHD to begin with (presumably due to the missing drive letter), or can find the drive but read it as containing 0kb.

I have tried connecting it directly to my motherboard with a SATA cable as a second hard drive. With the hard drive connected, the computer does not boot (Black screen with backlight).

I'm going to be trying to make a bootable Ubuntu usb stick as I've heard that Ubuntu is better at handling EHDs than Windows is, but my hopes aren't high.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? I just want to recover some of my files and then trash the damn thing.
