3x Titan Z on an ASUS Z87-WS for GPGPU

I'm building a desktop for scientific computing with GPUs. Right now the Titan Z (if Nvidia releases it soon) looks like a great choice for raw speed, memory, and price (compared to K40).

Is it a good idea or even possible to fit 3 of these side by side in an ASUS Z87-WS motherboard?

Any particular reason why? The z87 can do quad x8, right?

No. You need a x79 for 40 PCI-e lanes. In Z87 you'll get 16.

--> with that financial outlay, you want (obviously!) the best base architecture.

I thought SLI had a max of 4x total. Each titanz card would be 2x per card so two titanz cards which would be like 4x SLI... Wouldn't 3 titanz be like 6x SLI?

They don't need to be in SLI for GPGPU. Kind of like cryptocurrency mining, where SLI is not required. Actually it hurts the hashrate.

I just finished building two identical CUDA workstations using Asus z87-ws and three x GTX780 in SLI. Tight fit but works light a charm.

Length of gtx780 and titan seem to be the same:

Check z87-ws user guide for PCIE speeds when populating the motherboard with 1,2,3,4 GPUs.
