Hello everyone.
I have a Radeon 6950 2gb video card, and I've got 3 Asus VG248QE monitors I just picked up...

At 300 bucks a piece I was wondering....

I've got a EVGA GTX 970 4GB ACX 2.0 Graphics card on the way...

Was looking at surround gaming with these monitors, HOPEFULLY at 144hz and just have a REALLY great immersive gaming experience!

But, for 900 bucks...

MAINLY Star Wars: The Old Republic, BUT I'll play Crysis 3, Counter Strike, etc as well...

SO, What is the most ultimate gaming solution?

These 3 monitors I picked up?

A 46" 120hz Samsung smart tv?

OR a Samsung 28" 120hz 4k displayport monitor?

I'm new to all these expensive monitors and options, I came in to a little money to play with...but with going the 3 Asus VG248QE monitors, I don't want to find later there is a better option for gaming displays AFTER dropping the 1000 bucks and not being able to return them at that point

So, for 1000 bucks...if you're going for just ultimate monitor/tv/video setup for gaming, even OTHER than what I listed...what would you guys do? or stick with what I'm doing?

Ultimate gaming experience, easily -> "These 3 monitors I picked up"

Trust me, three screens in gaming is the best your going to get, much better compared to one I can assure you. I have a 4k monitor and have gamed on others three screened setups, no comparison. Even with a bigger screen, the gameplay is just bigger. With triple screens there is far more F.O.V, and it gives you a whole new perspective of gaming.

Those THREE monitors, EACH Come with their own Dual Link DVI Cable.
For ONE of those monitors, I will be using an ACTIVE DVI to displayport adapter to hook up to its Dual Link DVI Cable. This one Specifically

On the back of the video card, I would hook up 2 monitors straight DVI to DVI because there's 2 DVI ports on the back, and I'd hook up the 3rd Monitor with its provided dvi cable with an active displayport adapter on the end and hook it into the displayport on the graphics card for the 3rd monitor

Now, for games such as Star wars: the old republic, I want to be able to game across all 3 screens at the 144hz refresh rate these monitors come with, 144hz ON ALL 3 Monitors, at full 1080p resolution, Which I guess would be 5760x1080.

So, with what I described, with the hardware, monitors, cables, all setup as described? WILL everything work properly?? 144hz on all 3 monitors all full 1080??

OR, what cables/adapters/hardware/setup do I need to make that work??

For the third screen, is there any advantage of using a straight displayport cable from monitor to graphics card over using the dual link DVI-D cable that comes with the monitor and hooking up the active displayport adapter to the other end of the DVI-D cable and using that for the third monitor?

I would imagine a straight displayport cable is cheaper than the active displayport adapter I bought....there would be no issues? displayport cable doesnt need any active adapter or anything? just a cable like the other 2?

Which one would be better video quality? If the answer is go with the displayport cable, i'll buy that and return the adapter and pocket a little cash!
 
yes, DP to DP will work, and is not going to have any issues.

Video quality is the same, but DP cables are cheaper and it saves you from having a small box dangling from the cable.

I'd return the adapter and just get a DP-DP cable, far easier.

I figured, since my monitors are 144hz, you need dual link DVI cables to fully get the 144hz, BECAUSE my old monitor was a Asus VE247H and it has a single link DVI cable, SO I thought that you needed a DUAL Link DVI adapter for my current monitors...


EVERYTHING you're explaining to me makes it sound unnecessary, Like I wont need that 100 dollar adapter at all...

So why do people need that dual link adapter, ever? whats the difference between that one and a single link DVI to displayport adaptper?

When/WHY Would I ever need to use it?

I don't see a use for it. that USB is pointless to me.

Not every monitor has a DP input, and users who want triple displays with AMD need to utilise the dp port, so the adapter is needed for many. In the end, buying a monitor with a DP port for triple displays is smarter.

These don't work, it needs to be active to convert the video signals.

That one above is for the single link DVI to displayport adapter that I actually linked above, it's an ACTIVE adapter, as I described as well before.

So my question is, there are single link dvi cables, and dual link dvi cables
And there are single link dvi to displayport active adapters, and there are dual link dvi to displayport active adapter, such as this one

WHY would you ever need that dual link active adapter? not just me. but anyone. for what purpose?

Trying to understand these cables/adapters a bit more, all Greek to me, never played with this stuff before.
 
So I got my GTX 970 Today. all 3 monitors using dual link dvi cables. The ONE monitor that is using the displayport adapter is not being detected at all...using single link dvi-d to displayport adapter on the dual link dvi cable for that 3rd monitor?
 
if you have a gtx 970 I would advise you to get an "Acer XB280HK 4K G-Sync Monitor" for $800 or an "Asus ROG Swift PG278Q" for $800 if you want the 144hz. They are each a much better value than 3 1080p monitors for gaming at $900. Hec for $900 you could get 3 27" IPS 1440p Korean monitors if you prefer surround (3 displays) over the smoothness of g-sync.
 


to get 144hz on the 3rd monitor you will need to either use a DP to DP cable or buy an Active Dp to dual-link dvi converter, the active converter comes with a usb cable attached that is meant to provide extra power for the conversion. they are quite pricey though, about $90 for one.

That won't give a better gaming experience then three.

As said by me numerous times before is it active? It can't be passive.
 


i didn't say those monitors gave a better gaming experience as that is objective and determined by the users preference, i said it was a better value, the reason i say that is not many games support 3-way surround, my brother uses 3 monitors and more often than not he plays games on one, either because the game doesn't support it or because he gets annoyed of having to enable and disable surround whenever he wants to play a game or is done playing a game, not to mention how stretched out and distorted the outer monitors look.
