4 Pin Fan, 3 Pin MotherBoard.

So my friend had me upgrade his computer. The new Graphics chip, RAM, power supply and HDD all went in fine.

However, I'm having an issue with the fan, for the new processor. You see, it's a 4 pin fan, and the motherboard hookup is 3 pins. The fan is not working. Google told me to just not hook in the blue wire. The problem with this is, the blue wire isn't on one of the ends, so that wouldn't work too well.

Here's the specs:

Computer: HP Pavilion a1520e
Mobo: Asus M2N61-LA
New Processor/fan: AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200

The pins have small tabs on them that when depressed will allow you to remove them from the connector, a small paper clip or the point of a compass works, then replace them in the order you need.

sounds about right

obviously you need to know which pin requires what ???

or get a plug w 3 wires and hotwire it onto the required 3 out of 4 wires - then shrink wrap it. a decent compute shop or an electronics supply store should have the parts.

That worked! The fan is-a-spinning!

Now, whenever I start the computer, it shows the initial BIOS screen, and then it kindly informs the my fan has failed, and the system is now shutting down to protect itself.

I can't go into BIOS setup either, because I just get that failed fan message.

Any great insights?
