Question 4 Pin on 8pin power connector

Hello, today I got my motherboard (ASRock H610M) and i5 12400f Alder Lake CPU only to find out the board has 8 pin cpu power connector instead of 4 but I'm not sure if I split my 8 pin power connector when I first got the psu few years ago, can I attach them together and connect them to the board? Right now I'm only connecting 4.

The EPS (cpu) power connector is 4+4pin on any psu over @ 300w built in the last 15 years or so. If it has multiple EPS, they'll be 4+4pin too.

The reasoning behind that is compatibility with all motherboards. Motherboards (aftermarket) use a standardized 4, 8, 12 or 16pin auxiliary power just for the cpu, so psus needed to be adaptable to fit any of those. Your old board only required a 4pin because it was not designed to handle a large power cpu and/or overclocking. Your new motherboard is designed for that.

So you'll put the 4+4 back together properly, and use the full complete pin count to fit the 8pin socket with 4+4pin connector.

Hah, yep, that's exactly how it's supposed to be done 👍. Join the two parts together into 1 whole, then put into socket. It's crazy how many have issues with such a simple concept and try putting them in seperatly.
