To start off, I am building about four guest computers for my gaming room; these will not be used by me, but only by guests. Obviously I don't want to put in as much money or quality into the computers as my primary computer- again, they're for guests. I am trying to do a 4-way SLI configuration on these computers using an AM3 processor with GTX 580 3GB's. I have my own reasons for using these cards even though they are a few years old. I have about twenty of them lying around from donators to my gaming room, so why not use them? With that being said, I also know about all of the haters of AMD platforms using SLI, so no need.
My problem right now is that the only 4-way SLI AM3 motherboard that I know about is not available ANYWHERE and if it is, it's over $400 (it's normally around $200) and I have come to the conclusion that it is probably discontinued and I don't want to spend that price, especially if four of my computers will be identical. I have found 3-way SLI AM3 motherboards that are more than capable of supporting four graphics card if at least one is a single-slot card (Hydro Copper).
What I'm planning on doing for now is having two single-slot GTX 580 3GB Hydro Coppers on the same motherboard as two standard GTX 580 3GB cards, totalling to four cards. My question is, even though the motherboard that I am looking at says it can support 3-way SLI, could I possibly use 4-way SLI? Eventually I will be converting all four of the GTX 580 3GB cards into a liquid cooling solution.
Is this possible- even if the speeds are much slower, is it technically possible to do this?
