Hi, just quick question, looking to get a new monitor, debating the Philips 40" 4k or Acer predator 2k 144Hz. Question is pixel density. Mate reckons 40" @ 4k will look no different to a 27" 1440p monitor in graphical quality because of it size. Is this true? 40" would be sweet for gaming but if a 27" IPS 1440p with G-Sync and 144Hz looks the same as 4k with less graphical horsepower needed?
Thanks,
Have GTX 780ti SLI.

Solution
The 40" @ 2160p (4k) becomes Retina at 31 inches.

The 27" @ 1440p becomes Retina at 32 inches.

Looks the same is a matter of opinion. The 40 inch screen will clearly be larger but, as you pointed out, will require more graphical horsepower, thereby facilitating you to either spend more for hardware or lower your settings to accommodate.

It's up to your sitting distance, I've got a 24" 4k monitor (Dell P2415Q) and I can see the difference with a 1440p, specially with small text, gaming the difference is more subtle.
4k 40" has 110dpi, while the 27" 1440 has 108dpi. The pixel density is about the same, the 4k will look nicer, but it won't be a mind blowing difference.

Solution
2560x1440 = 3,686,400 Pixels per frame
3840x2160 = 8,294,400 Pixels per frame

27 inch monitor: Display size: 23.53" × 13.24" = 311.5in² (59.77cm × 33.62cm = 2009.68cm²) at 108.79 PPI, 0.2335mm dot pitch, 11834 PPI²

40 inch monitor: Display size: 34.86" × 19.61" = 683.68in² (88.55cm × 49.81cm = 4410.83cm²) at 110.15 PPI, 0.2306mm dot pitch, 12132 PPI²

For all intents and purposes, the monitors are identical in PPI and dot pitch.

40" @4k or 27" @2k?

Personally, I would take the 2k solution for the next 2-3 years.
It is still highly a luxury today to handle 4k resolution properly, especially if you aim ultra settings with 60fps or more on heavy demanding games.
A single GTX980Ti or 2xGTX970 can handle 2k with ease.
