Did you just put this machine together? If you did, it will take a week or more for the arctic to settle down and the temps should drop. 40C is nothing to worry about but chances are, the arctic silver needs to settle in or the HSF may not be installed correctly.

I checked the heatsink and everything seems fine, how would i know if i installed it wrong. Also, how long does it take for arctic silver to set?

mine is running under 30C idle... and Dvdpiddy,... this is an example of circumstances surrounding the processor, not a fault of the processor itself. Nothing wrong with Prescotts. I've heard of AMD's running at 50C idle, and 80C under load...

80C under load on an AMD? 939? 754?...unless a bug in the temp monitor, would begin underclocking itself, then if mainting the temps would lock the system....or fail...either or.

Prescotts are notorious for heat, make no mistake. So if you under 60C under load....I'd say dont worry about it.

Putting too much arctic silver on can lead to high temps.

Clean the surface down properly and apply as per their directions on their web site. See how it fairs then.

notorious for heat because the AMD fanboys emphasize that every time they talk about a Prescott.

it was a 939... I believe. It was a AMD FX-55 Clawhammer... and that's all there is to it.

LOL...cute.

AMD fanboys??? No, its the CPU's....even people who wont touch AMD *kev* admits Prescott based P4's have heat disapation issues. Tom's had an article about it last summer "Heat can kill your P4"....its not made up information, its FACT.

BTW. Before I got my 3200+ and Ultra-D I bought a 540J and EPOX EP-5EL i915 board. Had it for close to a month, and damn near bought a Thermaltake Big water kit too simply keep me happy (which isnt hard)

So before you call anybody a fanboy, review your facts...

P.S. I sold that CPU and board for $220....I paid $250 for the CPU and $83 for the board....wasnt worth it.

YES, heat can be an issue, but it seems its been controlled here...
so props to him, he's got a nice proc. and its not overheating...thats
all that matters to me.

Hmm, I thought the site said 200 hours for it to cure or break in.

Been awhile since I saw it, to lazy to look at it again. I just used artic silver 5 not long ago, still waiting to see it do it's magic on my P4 2.66, OC to 2.9.

I should put it back to 3 ghz to help burn it in some more perhaps, though I'm using stock cooler.

Temps with regular themal grease - 44 C idle.

Temps with artic silver 5 - 41-42 C idle.

Of course room temps are going to influence it..

Ok now considering I was one of those kids who would pile on the glue, how severely could too much thermal paste affect the temps?

Well from what I remember of the site, you don't need hardly that much to put on.

About the size of a bb or single piece of rice, does the trick, and to spread it out with a razor, or even credit card.

One problem you could run into with Artic Silver 5, is that it has does have metal particles that will conduct electricity, and will short out something if you do a lobb job, and be careless about it.
