Hello! I am in despair. Don't know what to do. My PC constantly makes insufficient reboots. Occasionally, my screen turns off and fans go 100%, for 5 - 7 seconds I can hear sound from a game and discord, and people can hear me. Then the sound disappears and the screen is black with fans on throttle (RGB lights on GPU and other components are on).
It happens unpredictably, during web surfing or during gaming sessions (more likely to get reboot). The only way to stop this condition is to press the hard reset button. It may not happen for 2 days or may occur 10-15 times in the single evening.
It started when I changed my GPU from 3080 asus rog strix to 4090 gigabyte gaming OC. Temps are outstandingly low in both CPU and GPU (including VRAM temps).
Current system specs-
  • MB-Gigabyte z490 aorus master
  • GPU- 4090 gigabyte gaming OC
  • CPU- intel i9 10900k
  • Ram- Ballistix 3600 64gb/4, 3600mhz.
  • Ssd- 1- XPG GAMMIX pciE 2tb nvme, Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb nvme, Crucial p5 2tb nvme.
  • Hdd - Toshiba 7200rpm, 4 TB
  • AIO - Arctic liquid freezer II 420
  • PSU - EVGA supernova g plus 1300 watt
  • Case - fractal design meshify 2 XL
  • Monitor - LG 34GN850-b
What I tried in order to resolve the problem:
  • 1- Driver clean install via nvidia experience (no result)
  • 2- DDU with boot flash (no result)
  • 3- Syscheck (everything is fine)
  • 4- Memtest full, took more than a day to finish. (fine)
  • 5- Remount of components of PC (completely, with remount of MOBO)
  • 6- Checked every single cable attachment 5 times (connections, visible integrity, looseness)
  • 7- Updated MB bios (twice, different versions)
  • 8- Updated GPU bios (once, both bioses, primary and secondary, OC and silent)
  • 9- Installed older drivers (GPU)
  • 10- Updated all system drivers (no result)
  • 11- Installation of dummy win10pro (no result)
  • 12- Installation of dummy win11pro (no result)
  • 13- Switched different power modes in windows settings (saving, performance, custom ones) (no result)
  • 14- Turned off XMP profile to stock frequency on RAM (no result)
  • 15- Turned off auto CPU frequency adjusters in bios (no result)
  • 16- Switched from DP cable to HDMI cable (no result)
  • 17- Bought surge filter (no result)
  • 18- bought APC LE1200 Line-R 1200VA Automatic Voltage Regulator (no result)
  • 19- tried different power plugs (no result)
  • 20- Turned off Hardware acceleration GPU scheduling (no result)
  • 21- Switched from OC mode on GPU to Silent Mode (no result)
  • 22- Switched PSU from seasonic prime 1000w to Corsair 1000w (no result)
  • 23- Switched PSU from Corsair 1000w to EVGA 1300w G plus (no result)
  • 24- Checked event journal (clean, except of kernel errors, caused by incomplete reboot)
  • 25- Replaced CPU cooling from Noctua dh-15 to Arctic liquid freezer II 420
  • 26- Excluded improper or incomplete PC build.
I decided that my GPU is faulty because on the previous 3080 everythings worked stable. Brought it to the store and they tested it, as they said, 48 hours in furmark. No issues.
I brought my rig to them, they tested my rig without and with the GPU for 48 hours with CPU testing and GPU testing (Stress tests) simultaneously. No Issues found.
I took my PC back home, 2 days everything worked, then reboots again. I am in a deep depression. Help me please. I am not professional, I am a healthcare worker. My knowledge is enough only for these basic steps. My PC is my only pleasure. What I missed or can apply ?

Furmark fully stresses gpu so not much change in the way of power states. Have you done this test yourself overnight? This isn't a good test really to determine stability at lower power states. Tests the pc shop should have done is mimic what you do at home, browsing, some gaming etc. Try furmark like they did and see if it crashes.

In NvidiaCP change power plan to maximum performance and see how you go.

Consult Gigabyte, there might be a firmware upgrade for the card. Perhaps replacement maybe warranted.

All your troubles began with this card so it shouldn't be a coincidence that something else is causing this all of a sudden. You have done well troubleshooting so far anyhow but think the card has power issues, either related to drivers or card itself.

Hello! I tried Furmark and 3d mark and OCCT test. I did get reboots in them, and reboot happened in Furmark and 3dmark in the same manner. Either, no reboots or frequent reboots in different time.
I installed firmware update from gigabyte official website, there were two new bioses. installed both

Writing to tell you I am having the exact same issue. Started a couple of days ago after updating to the newest drivers, and will happen randomly when browsing the web or gaming as well. My crash is a bit different, and all screens will go black, and all audio will stay. All corsair lights will go pure white, cant see anything changing on the GPU. Sometimes 10-20 minutes later it will come right back up as if nothing happen, exactly where i left off. Most of the times it ends with me having to hard reset it to go away. I can almost always recreate it by changing display settings, like toggling HDR on and off too many times, going in and out of exclusive full screen applications, and other tasks like that.

Weird enough we both came from 3080 GPU (mine was a EVGA), to a 4090, (ASUS TUF). we also currently have the exact same CPU. I am at my wits end. For some reason I am inclined to believe that it is a physical power cord issue with the 12VHPR connector, but at this point it just may be time to contact the manufacturer. Since we have 2 different brands though, I highly doubt its some flaw specific to one brand.

I am truly sorry that it is happened to you. Really sorry. I feel you man. Perhaps you right and this is the cord. I did not try to use another one. Two days ago, I did RMA. I hope they would replace it. If they will (might be during January) and the issue will gone, I well let you know here. If the issue would persist, I will try another cable probably. If you do it sooner than me, message here please as well.

Okay, wanted to give ample time to make sure that it was solved. After sending my post and reading some other accounts on reddit, I investigated the power cable. My case (Lian Li 011 dynamic XL) is a really tight fit with the card, so the cables kind of press against the side glass. I went and took off the side panel, gave the cables some breathing room by making the angle less sharp (since the glass isn't there) and I have not had a single crash since then. That was on Friday night. Nothing has changed software wise, same drivers, same windows installation, all of it. The only thing that has changed was just me angling the cables differently. Did not even reseat. Just gave it a firm push into the card to make sure the connector was fully into the card. My side panel is still off and i'm waiting to see if i get another crash. If I do, I will update you here. Hopefully this solves your issue, I know firsthand how frustrating this is especially with such an expensive investment. Maybe try giving it a shot while you wait for RMA response.
Have a happy new year, and I really hope this solves your issue. Sorry that your going through this as well.

I was having the exact same issues with a Corsair Crystal 570x and a 4080. I tried a lot of the same steps OP was listing to no avail. Read this, took the side panel off and it's now been a day without any black screens. I guess now I'll just wait for Cable Mod's new right angle adapter. Hopefully with that I can put the side panel back on.

Glad I was able to help you. For anyone finding this in the future, if the power cables are pressed against your side glass/panel at all, I highly recommend taking off the side panel and giving your cables some room. Im almost at a week without crashing since doing this. The stock NVIDA cable is too bulky to fit in my Lian li o11 dynamic XL and Asus TUF 4090. I have a cable mod 3x8 pin coming in tomorrow that I plan on seeing if i can run with the side panel back on since it is much thinner. This is a stop gap as the 90 angle adapter seems to be several months out. I will update here on the results.
BTW, anyone interested in getting a cable mod 12VHPR to remedy, I recommend you act quick; Cable mod is going through a upgrade for their plant that is pushing back all orders to Feb-March. They have some left in stock, I managed to snag one before they sold out. There are other manufactures for cable replacements, but its who I personally trust the most.

I wish I tried that. I got a replacement - ASUS 4090 TUF OC. I had this card for three days. Played and tested it in hardcore mode=) No reboots. But I gave it back to them as well as it had atrocious coil whine. In the next room, my wife heard it... Ordered another gigabyte.... Will keep updated. Probably, I will order the good cable in advance.

I am happy to hear that the issue might be resolved that way. Unfortunately, I missed my chance to try it

Could you please give me the link to this cable? I feel stupid, visited their website and couldn't find it.

Don't think it's available yet.

The angled adapters which I am waiting on, are not available yet yes. However the replacement 12VHPR cable which is much thinner than the OEM Nvida cable provided you can order here, Just make sure you order the correct one for your power supply. Remember that these are on shipping freeze because of the manufacturing upgrades, if you are in the US or Canada, you can look at instock ready to ship cables here, if they have any left.

I just had the same issue but my 4090 had been running fine for awhile now. I had turned on A.I. cooling in Armory Crate lol. If you have AI cooling or anything else for that matter turn it off lol!
