1800 pt Rogue Trader Tournament at DunDraCon yesterday. I was playing My
Space Marine army. Basically Commander w/squad (vet Sgt, Apothecary,
Standard Bearer) in a Razorback, 5 man Terminator squad, Dread w/ass can
& power fist, 8 man Tac squad in a Rhino, 6 man Tac squad in a
Razorback, 6 man Scout squad(Vet Sarge w/Teleport Homer), 5 man Assault
squad, 8 man Devastator Squad, Predator Annihaltor w/hvy bolters, and
Whirlwind. I think I'm going to drop either the Terminators or the
Assault squad and make the other one bigger.
For the setup, instead of just pairing people randomly, they divided
people into 2 groups; Defenders (IG, Marines, & Eldar and/or Tau) vs
Everyone else. There was some confusion, and some of the Eldar & Tau
ended up fighting on the wrong sides, but anyway, no Marine vs Marine
battles.
The first game I was playing vs Tyranids. 6x 12 strong Genestealer
squads, 1x 6 strong Tyranid warriors, 2x Carnifex. We were playing an
Omega Cleanse mission so the deployment was basic Troops with no
transports. Which was my Scout squad.

"Worst deployment ever."

I have a picture of my lone scout squad surronded by 6 infiltrating
genestealer squads exactly 18" away. Even better, the first turn was
night fighting, and I rolled 9" on my visibility roll. So much for the
heavy bolter.
Fortunately, I got lucky with reserve rolls and got my Whirlwind &
Terminator on the 2nd turn. Terminators deep strike adjacent to the
scout squad and open up w/ass can & storm bolters and cause some serious
carnage. Whirlwind drops one right onto a squad of genestealers and
blows away about half of them. Mass carnage ensues with genestealers
ripping stuff up, Whirlwind blowing away up to 9 genestealers in a
single squad. His Tyranid warriors & Carnifexeses pretty much did
nothing, my Assault squad ended up hiding in a corner contesting a table
quarter.
It ended up with a VP draw, I think he had about 160 more VP than I did.
He was only holding his deployment table quarter, the others were all
contested.
For the second round, instead of using a round robin or something,
everybody picked up, and moved one table to the left. I faced of vs a
fairly standard Tau army. IIRC, 3 or 4 Fire warrior squads, one in a
transport, 1 fairly large Kroot squad, 1 Pathfinder squad w/transport, 1
Broadside suit, 2 Crisis suits in seperate squads with 5 drones each,
Hammerhead w/Railgun, and 1 broadside suit. It was a take and hold
mission and Tau were the defenders so he set up his FW squads, Kroot, &
Hammerhead in the central area. I infiltrated my scouts fairly close to
the objective behind a hill, and kept the terminators in reserve.
On the first turn, my Whirlwind blew away more than half his kroot
squad, they failed their morale check and ran off. High points of the
game were my assault squad destroying 2 fire warrior squads and chasing
off the broadside suit. He deep-striked one of his battlesuits right in
front of my whole army, got all the drones blown away, and chased down
and hacked to pieces by my command squad. Predator & Dread destroyed,
Hammerhead & Whirlwind got it's weapon destroyed, but not until
destroying the Kroot squad and decimating a firewarrior squad. I managed
to rush in my 8 man tac squad (down to 5 men) on top of the objective at
the last minute to scrape a win. I don't think he was keeping track of
his seeker missiles correctly, but I didn't ask him how many he had
before we started, and he kept rolling 1's to hit anyway.
Finally for the last round they finally matched people based on points,
and I ended up facing an Eldar player with Iyanden Ghost Warriors.
Troops were 1x 10 man Wraithguard squad, 1x 5 man Wraithguard in
Waveserpent, and 2x Wraithlords. Also present were an Avatar, Farseer,
3x Vypers, 2x warlocks, Howling banshees w/Exarch in a Wavesperent, and
1x 3 man Rangers squad. Kind of an annoying army to fight, but it looked
reallllly spiffy, purplish with stars spotted all over.
We were playing the Blitz mission and I was defending. There was a big
honking ruined building in the middle of no mans land, and a hill right
in front of it, so I set up my 6 man tactical squad & razorback behind
the hill, Devastator squad inside the building, Whirlwind behind the
building, and scouts hiding behind a hill.
My first Tac squad and the Devastators were blown away pretty quickly,
in spite of their cover saves, due to mutiple star cannon shots from the
Vypers & Wraithlords. I think I only managed to get 1 or 2 Wraithguard
with my whirlwind, and do one wound on the Farseer before it got
destroyed, so I just barely made back the points cost.
Highlights of the game, my Terminator squad blowing away a Wavesperpent
with the ass-can, getting chewed up by the Banshee squad that was inside
it, then the Banshees getting blown away by my Dread. Predator blowing
away the other Waveserpent, killing half of the Wraithguard, then
getting blown up by the survivors. He didn't manage to get anything into
the 3rd zone (well, the Banshees did, briefly), but still won on VPs.
So, overall I won on, lost one, and tied one. I came in somewhere above
the middle of the pack, due to the bonus points they gave out for having
a copy of the rulebook & your codex. The Eldar guy I played against won
the best painted army award.
They made up a special award for one guy, "Commander of the CHEESE"
T-Shirt. He had an Imperial Guard armored company. Not only was it
unpainted, it wasn't even completely assemble (no treads on the tanks),
he had no rulebook, no codex, only 1 die, and an illegible scribbled
army list.
My MVP for the match was definately the Whirlwind. In the first game, I
think it did as much damage as the rest of my army put together. Of
course most of the time I killed 9 out of 12 genestealers in a squad was
because they just finished wiping out one of my other units. One time I
did have a "danger close" fire mission at a group of genestealers only
13" away, but I managed to get them. It destroyed a couple critical
units in the 2nd game, and (almost) made back it's points in the 3rd game.
