OK, so I've nearly finished some new boxes of SM's, and I've painted the
non-helmetted(?) faces with Dwarf Flesh, then Flesh Wash, then highlighted with
Elf Flesh. They look pretty good, for a newbie, but I see the pics in the rule
book, codexes, etc that have all these models with the eyes and mouths painted
in. I tried the way the "red shirts" recommended, but they came out pretty
poor. How many of you guys/gals out there detail the faces to that extent? Do
you think not detailing the face lessens the effect of a nicely painted figure?
(personally I think it's worse to have a badly painted set of eyes) And if
you do detail the eyes, can you share a few tips or lead me to a webpage with
some helpful instruction?

It might help us to help you if we knew what technique you were shown and
are using so we don't give you the same info all over again. Anyway, there
are probably as many ways to do faces/eyes as there are space marine
chapters (and they ALL require practice), so here's a couple of websites
that should help:

http://www.wegotgame.net/jen/face_guide.html (Jennifer Haley, multiple
golden daemon winner)

http://www.paintingclinic.com/ (Dr. Faust's painting clinic)

Grr... first post presumed lost, stupid google groups.

If you are only painting to a battlefield standard its often best not
to bother. Eyes only show up on close inspection, are fiddly to do and
make the model look messy if they are done badly. Just shading the eye
sockets is effective. To begin with it is often best to concentrate on
getting the model to look neat with as few mistakes as possible as this
sort of thing does show up from a distance.

I use the following methods:
Paint socket black
Paint white leaving fine black line around edge of socket
Paint black line from top of eye to bottom (so the model doesn't seem
to be staring). Make sure both eyes have the pupil in the same place so
the model isn't going cross eyed.

I second the suggestion of http://www.paintingclinic.com/ as it is an
excellent painting site.
