Hi

For XMAS Santa kindly got me a 'space marine megaforce' pack. In this pack
it has a 'combat squad' - which seems to comprise of 5 regular looking space
marines. But what is a combat squad? the codex doesn't mention them. Do
they count as a troops choice? or can I make them into a command squad - if
so does one of the models have to be distinguished as a sergeant?

Thanks
Garbin

Marine tactical squads can be taken as 5 - 10 marines, 1 of which is the
sergeant. So yes, you can use these 5 to represent a troops choice. A
sergeant looks just like a normal marine, however you could arm him with a
bolt pistol and close combat weapon if you wanted for no points change.
Normally sergeants just have something that makes them stand out, like a
different coloured helmet or marking, or stick a purity seal on him.

And yes, you could field them as a command squad if you wanted too.
Basically, use them however you see fit.

"combat squad" means the same as demi-squad. i.e. a full squad is 10
marines, but it's often split into 2 combat squads of 5 marines in small
actions for greater tactical flexibility / mutual support or whatever. no
reason why you can't kit it out as a command squad if you have the
components.

In addition to what Dappere Dodo posted, the seal is on the sprue - it's a
little round thing with a piece of scroll attached, that looks like a wax
seal such as used on letters in the old days.

Look at

In the picture of the squad, the marine in the centre has a purity seal on
his right shoulder pad.

DAMN boy,,,,, dont you read the Codex??????
its in there.

ah well you must be a very green boy haha never mind
basicly the name says it all.
a seal of purity. it means that the the wearer is pure of mind

in games terms. if you have failed a leadership test an you have
to fall back. move your models 2D6"
if one of you models has purity seals you role 3 dice and discard
the highest.
for instanse you have a SM Tactical squad with a veteran sergeant,
or is commanded by an HQ caracter, and that Caracter is equipt with
a purity seal.
that Squad fails its leadership test and id has to fall back
you role a 5, 2 and a 3. you most discard the 5 and fallback 2+3=5"

Boy! Boy! I'm actually a father of two boys, which is how I got in to this
Warhammer thing in the first place.

I currently have a Necron army, which seemed to be more straight forward
than these space marines - and much easier to paint ;-)

Actually there is a basis for the term Combat squad. I believe in Rogue
Trader days space marines came in squads of ten space marines, no
more... no less. This was carried over to Version 2 of the rules.
Somewhere along the line it became apparent that if you played a small
game that it was very disadvantageous to have a couple of 10 man squads
and the idea of the combat squad was spawned. A 10 man squad could be
split into two 5 man squads to give marines a bit of tactical
flexibility. When Version 3 came along the variable squad size of 5-10
marines appeared making the traditional idea of a combat squad
unecessary. So for all intensive purposes a combat squad in Version 4 is
any squad of regular space marines...
Actually there is a

No, in 2nd edition, Space Marines came as either 5 or 10 man
squads. Chaos Space Marines could range from 5-10, but Imperial ones
came in fixed numbers. A tactical squad of 10 could be split into two
five man squads before the game, hence the term "combat squads"
