Hello

I want to know why we don't get full 100mb internet speed as my isp advertised , i understand it is up to 100 and i get 40 ( 4.4mbps~ download speed ). But why is it like that? What's the technical answer behind that?

We have a gigabit modem from our isp given to me with this 100mb package and our cables are CAT5e which are supposed to support up to that amount , and my motherboard's ethernet socket does support up to 1000mb.

What can possibly restrict that speed from reaching us? I don't understand.

Solution
-Or if you just want to know why you get 40mbps SOMETIMES -- that's most likely just from the ISP overselling their bandwidth. They assume only a % of people will be using some or all of their allocated bandwidth at any time. Buying, say, a 100mbps line vs 50 only means you can use up to 100mbps IF it's available, and sometimes has no effect on your Quality of Service rating set by the provider, meaning you're basically paying for nothing unless you use your connection mostly on off-hours. (ETA: though if there's no price difference, per your post, it's all good)

-So from a technical side, in a more rural area, they might have 1gbps line servicing 200 homes, and let's say they all get up to 50mbps (ignoring upload). Obviously, if...
ISPs oversell bandwidth as standard practice. Defective modems can result in a similar situation -- my modem's supposed to support 100mbps but flakes out on a 50mbps, so now I have 20mbps. You may actually be too far from a repeater to actually see those speeds - and the ISP may or may not be aware of that (the tech's supposed to test when they install). There're a whole bunch of potential problems, even including the coax in your house/apartment.

You'll probably want a tech on-site to look at the issue. You shouldn't be charged for it if there's a problem.

I would be paying the same for 50~ up to 100~ , but it's just sad that i can't get a full 100mb's. Well since nothing might be wrong with my setup , i guess i'll give them a call. Thanks though :)

Obviously, if everyone used their service full-throttle at once, they'd each be limited to 5mbps down. Similar to fractional reserve banking, ISPs are banking on everyone using their service some of the time in some quantity, but not everyone using all of their service all of the time (but in some cases, there may be bad faith on the ISP's part -- other times, it's just bad luck).

Ironically , we are the only few in my neighborhood who use this specific isp. So maybe their network lines are the problem. Thank you for explaining , and i'm still calling on them to see whats up with that.
